If the Victorian walls of this place could talk they’d have plenty of stories to tell, with the address having been home to some of the city’s best loved drinking destinations over the years. None have been prettier or better conceived than Alvarium, though, a neighbourhood cocktail and wine bar with happy hour running from 4PM each weeknight, including Fridays, bright interior design and plant-based menu in-keeping with the owners’ philosophy, with a statement mural adorning brick and tile work that has stood in place for centuries. Think bees (this is Manchester, after all), colourful flowers, and lush green grasses, all overlooked by the increasingly iconic silhouette of our hometown’s ever-evolving and rapidly developing skyline.
People flock here for two things above all else — the excellent brunch food, and the unlimited Bloody Marys you get for two hours with every individual dish. Prosecco is also an option. Highlights in terms of cuisine include the Shakshuka, or slow roasted and spiced tomatoes and red peppers with creamy cumin, tahini, and feta accompanied by sourdough bread. The Reuben isn’t to be missed, either, with seitan pastrami made right here in-house, fresh sauerkraut and pickles. Not looking for such a fill? Check the Oyster Mushroom Wings for a great alternative to the classic bar snack. There’s also a strong selection of unique cocktails on offer, including the ultra-refreshing Cherry & Mint Sling (Beafeater Gin, pineapple, grenadine, lemon and fresh mint leaves), or, for fans of bitters, the Sage & Orange Spritz (Malfy Blood Orange Gin, Aperol, lime, homemade chilli and sage cordial, with a soda top).
