Charlie Cooper, Matt & Phreds

Matt & Phreds
Charlie Cooper – Early Evening Session

As part of their new Saturday early evening live music gigs Matt & Phreds welcome Charlie Cooper, one of their favourite singer/songwriters to their early evening live sessions. Charlie Cooper writes vintage soul, updated perfectly, sung with deep and husky soul-pipes! Not only comparable with classic voices like Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey but also up there with modern soul divas Alice Russell and Sharon Jones, Charlie is a vocal force to be reckoned with. The songs emerge from another time, influenced by the classic songwriting and arranging of Bacharach and Hal David, accompanied by grooves akin to old school Stax and Motown. This paired down piano solo gig will showcase this talented artist in an intimate setting.

Superb talent and excellent musicality. Great charm and positivity coupled with that little bit of magic which all good performers have” – Jools Holland

Mr Scruff Keep It Unreal, Band On The Wall

Band On The Wall
Mr Scruff Keep It Unreal

Time for Mr. Scruff’s monthly residency at Band on the Wall. As always, Scruff will be at the controls for 5 hours, serving up a melting pot of jazz, soul, hip hop, funk, disco, deep house, reggae, afrobeat, latin, and plenty of goodies that don’t fit into any category. Expect fantastic sound, a lovely mixed crowd & great atmosphere. This is a “non-mobile disco” so Scruff asks that you don’t use cameras and phones on the dance floor. He asks this because we want the dancefloor to be a place where everyone can be in the moment. If you’re tweeting, texting, bidding for a pair of socks on eBay or taking a picture of your friends, you’re not only out of the moment, you also might be making it hard for someone else to be in the moment. The bar or balcony is a much better place for this.

Soup Kitchen
Black Peaches

Black Peaches is the new project of Rob Smoughton, probably best known as a long-time member of Hot Chip and Scritti Politti, while his alter-ego Grovesnor has released a number of albums to critical acclaim. A midway point between the swamp and the tropics, Black Peaches’ music is gloriously loose-limbed and strung-out: a psychotropic stew of country boogie, spiritual jazz and funk. Support at Soup Kitchen comes from Raf Rundell (live & DJ set).
