The Haggis Horns

The Haggis Horns

The Haggis Horns combine heavy breakbeat funk, hip-hop, soul and afrobeat with jazz to stunning effect. They’ve been at the forefront of the UK funk scene since they came to people’s attention after the release of the legendary album ‘Keb Darge Presents The New Mastersounds‘. They have two funk-fuelled albums under their belt, ‘Hot Damn!‘ & ‘Keep On Movin’‘ (First Word Records) and they have been rocking crowds the world over for years winning fans with their distinctive northern funk sound combining ass-shaking breakbeats, afrobeat, soul and hip-hop.  The members of The Haggis Horns have performed with the likes of Jamiroquai, John Legend & The Roots, Amy Winehouse, Morcheeba, Roots Manuva, Lou Donaldson, Elbow, Nightmares On Wax, Dennis Coffey, Adele, Corinne Bailey Rae, Mark Ronson, Robbie Williams, Duran Duran, Craig Charles Presents The Fantasy Funk Band, The Cinematic Orchestra, Martina Topley-Bird, Kano, Estelle, Lily Allen, KT Tunstall & Snowboy, to name just a few!

Now a 5-piece based around the nucleus of Atholl Ransome on saxes/flute/ perc/vocals and Malcolm Strachan on trumpet/flugelhorn/perc/vocals, they have enlisted the help of Dan Goldman (aka JD73) on keyboards and Moog bass to add a new depth to the sound of Luke Flowers on drums and Ben Barker on guitar/vocals, complementing the power and finesse of the horns. Guaranteed to get the dance floor jumping – this is a band at the top of their game and we promise you one of the best Funk & Soul club nights ever!  The Haggis Horns

Saturdays, Soup Kitchen

Soup Kitchen
‘Saturdays’ at Soup Kitchen

The guys at Soup Kitchen have gone for a simple solution when it came to naming their regular Saturday night event and consequently it will be called… er… “Saturdays”! The night will exhibit friends and local talents in the cavernous surroundings of their underground dancing den. They have DJs on rotation in the Kitchen and hand the cellar over to a different promotion every week, this week belongs to Beat Boutique featuring John Morales & Jamie Bull.

8pm-1am

Beat Boutique, September

Beat Boutique featuring John Morales / Jamie Bull / Liam Q / Jonny Mangas

When the Legendary Producer, Mixer/Remixer and DJ’in Pioneer for the Soul n Disco scene across the world for over 3 decades John Morales say’s he’ll fly from NYC to play Beat Boutique in the Basement of Soup Kitchen in the heart of Manchester in front of 200 Soul n Disco lovers, the guys behind the night got rightfully excited, and so should you!

John’s has worked with so many artists over the years including Jocelyn Brown, Inner Life, Universal Robot Band, Musique, Bumblebee Unlimited, Rolling Stones, Dan Hartman, Shalamar, Odyssey, Aretha Franklin.. the list goes on.. Spinning records in clubs such as Pippins, Bentleys, 1018, Limelight and Studio 54! His highly acclaimed M&M Mixes are now on Volume III which is soon to be released. John Morales

If that wasn’t enough excitement for one night, they went and asked one of our favourite UK DJ’s to come join the ranks: Jamie Bull. It was at Leeds polysexual mecca Speed Queen where Jamie first gained notoriety for his eclectic disco and house sets. His residency there for five years for a flamboyant crowd provided him with a platform upon which he was able to develop his skills at dance radio network Galaxy FM. He became the producer and resident spinner for their Galaxy Anthems show, helping ravers in semi-retirement to relive those hands in the air moments once again. These days Jamie is synonymous with his residency at Manchester’s HomoElectric: A non-stop exotic disco for twisted sleazy people. He has played alongside Horse Meat Disco, Roisin Murphy, Crazy P, Maurice Fulton and Disco Bloodbath.

Resident DJ’s and Promoters Liam Q & Jonny Mangas as always will be knocking out sets throughout the night sending the crowd into a Soul fuelled frenzy and joining the dots to this beautiful picture..

C-City, Matt & Phreds

Matt & Phreds
C-City

C-City are a four-piece instrumental combo from Merseyside who will “tip you up and shake you out of the nostalgia-mare where revivalist palpitations are mistaken for the pulse of progress”. This quartet are, however, students of jazz, rock, punk, fusion, and electronica, glued to the glory and joy of Ornette Coleman, Duke Ellington, Miles Davies, Magma, Can, Beefheart, Zappa and Joe Harriott. Having studied what has gone before, they fuse it with something inspired, something new, to create the unique post-punk jazz-rock sound of C-City C-City

Caged Asylum, Back To School

Join DJ Mikee Diablo and guests for some serious partying where fancy dress is always optional but always encouraged, and the usual dress code is slick & stylish casual and all things Rock & Metal, as risqué as you dare!

The playlist features the biggest names in metal ranging from classics such as Pantera and Slayer, the new school sounds of Trivium and Killswitch Engage and crossover rock from Queens of the Stone Age and Rage Against The Machine – all given a thunderous sheen by a killer 40k sound system. Drinks are great value and the vibe easy going and unpretentious, and did I mention there’s a lap-dancing lounge? Expect some St Trinians style naughtiness from the Angels Of Death Caged Asylum

Tonight’s headliners, Halfway To New York burst onto the UK music scene last autumn with their debut single ‘Out of Time‘ amidst a cascade of critical media acclaim, and followed this up with an even more impressive musical serving in the form of their debut EP, ‘Treading Water‘, released on 21st May. Earlier this year they flew to LA for a series of meetings and showcases to industry moguls including CAA and Warner Bros and are currently in negotiations with a major US agent for a support tour back in the US. Throw in a recent sell-out gig at The Barfly, London and an appearance at Hard Rock Calling and Halfway To New York look set to become a highly formidable indie/rock force across both sides of the Atlantic.  Halfway To New York
