Charlie Cooper, Matt & Phreds

Matt & Phreds
Charlie Cooper – Early Evening Session

As part of their new Saturday early evening live music gigs Matt & Phreds welcome Charlie Cooper, one of their favourite singer/songwriters to their early evening live sessions. Charlie Cooper writes vintage soul, updated perfectly, sung with deep and husky soul-pipes! Not only comparable with classic voices like Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey but also up there with modern soul divas Alice Russell and Sharon Jones, Charlie is a vocal force to be reckoned with. The songs emerge from another time, influenced by the classic songwriting and arranging of Bacharach and Hal David, accompanied by grooves akin to old school Stax and Motown. This paired down piano solo gig will showcase this talented artist in an intimate setting.

Superb talent and excellent musicality. Great charm and positivity coupled with that little bit of magic which all good performers have” – Jools Holland

The Exacters are “funky people” from right here in Manchester. For their debut single, ‘Ain’t Gonna Lie’ they drafted in some very special talent. Guy’s former Dojo Cuts bandmate, Roxie Ray, wrote and recorded the storming vocals for this enormous, floor-filling debut. Meanwhile, trumpet supremo Matt Burke arranged and produced the bruising horn parts on both Ain’t Gonna Lie and b-side The Ashes. Their mission for the future is simple: more uber-tight rhythms, mighty horns and formidable guest vocalists.

The Ruby Lounge
Jah Wobble’s Invaders of The Heart

Over the past three decades or so, Jah Wobble has ploughed his own furrow as a prolific solo artist, as well as becoming a well-respected session musician, with a genuine passion for Eastern and Global music. The man born John Wardle began his musical journey when he met John Lydon and Sid Vicious in 1973. It was Vicious who not only nicknamed John ‘Jah Wobble’ after a drunken binge but also loaned him his first bass guitar. Lydon asked JW to join Public Image Limited (aka PiL) in spring 1978. Wardle’s distinctive ‘low end’ bass became the backbone of PiL’s pioneering sound. After its follow-up, the exploratory yet sinister soundscapes of ‘Metal Box’, Wardle became disillusioned by politics within the band and their reluctance to play live. He eventually split from PiL in mid-1980 and embarked on a prolific solo career. Join Jah Wobble’s Invaders of The Heart at The Ruby Lounge tonight.
