Deli Sosimi, Band On The Wall

Band On The Wall
Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra / DJ Irfan Rainy

An evening of electrifying party-till-you-drop Afrobeat from the incredible Dele Sosimi Afrobeat OrchestraDele Sosimi was musical director of the critically acclaimed Fela! at London’s National Theatre, and Band on the Wall is thrilled that he’ll be performing on their stage with his very own Afrobeat Orchestra as part of We Face Forward.

“Sosimi creates some of the most bewitching grooves in modern African music” ~ E Jazz News

“Elevates Afro-jazz unto a new realm” ~ Xtrax Magazine

From his early discovery as a 16-year old keyboardist by world-famous Fela Kuti, who brought him into his band Egypt 80, Dele rose to prominence as musical director of the 30 piece band during the 80’s and 90’s. Whilst at the helm he hatched a plan for a new more aggressive sound, featuring shorter songs and tighter arrangements with Fela’s son Femi Kuti. The result was the band Positive Force, with whom he toured globally for a decade, honing his craft and exploring all the richness of this amazing music.

“The most fluent Afrobeat you’re going to hear today” ~ Straight No Chaser

“The glorious interplay of scorching horns, pulsing electric piano and endlessly shifting rhythm section had the audience packed” ~ Daily Telegraph

Following the live performance, Irfan Rainy will be on the decks for a special DJ set ’til late.

Presented by Band on the Wall in association with We Face Forward - a season of contemporary art and music from West Africa, celebrated across Manchester as part of the London 2012 Festival. www.wefaceforward.org

Saturdays, Soup Kitchen

Soup Kitchen
‘Saturdays’ at Soup Kitchen

The guys at Soup Kitchen have gone for a simple solution when it came to naming their regular Saturday night event and consequently it will be called… er… “Saturdays”! The night will exhibit friends and local talents in the cavernous surroundings of their underground dancing den. They have DJs on rotation in the Kitchen and hand the cellar over to a different promotion every week, this week belongs to meandyou.

8pm-1am

meandyou, August

meandyou presents Fred P / Juniper

Lifelong New Yorker Fred P has been heavily assoicated with the recent revival of the city’s house scene. Alongside many of his American peers, he has helped turn the attention back on the city that helped shape the clubbing world as we know it. Although Fred has been part of the scene for more than 20 years, it’s his close connection with the likes of DJ Jus’ Ed, Levon Vincent, DJ Qu and Move D that have helped propel his name in more recent years on a global scale.

Acting under both Fred P and his alias, Black Jazz Consortium, Fred has crafted out an instantly recognisable sound, releasing on his own Soul People Music imprint, Underground Quality, Strength Music Recordings, Workshop and Mule Electronic amongst others. His dj and production styles are similar, focusing on smooth but driving future house and techno that infuses dark droning melodies, sharp percussion and infectious subbass. He is the master of all things deep, treading a careful balance between melancholy and grit that can hear him invent the most beautiful house next to some real lofi, modified contemporary technoid sounds.

We consider Fred to be one of the most important house djs and producers of recent years, and are excited that he’ll be playing for us at meandyou for the first time. Support on the night comes from resident Juniper who have recently finished the next release for Hamburg’s Smallville imprint along with the very talented Arnaldo.
