What's On in the Northern Quarter ~ Saturday 16th March

Kraak
Wet Pelican / Orange Room

Wet Pelican invite you for a “night you’ll never forget” as they head to Kraak for the launch party for their latest recording ‘Dead Man’s Dance‘, and they’ve invited some friends along to party too! First up will be the shimmering guitars, massive bass riffs and four-to-the-floor powerhouse beats, topped off with 60’s vocal harmonies that are equal parts sneer and serenade from Melbourne made and Liverpool based Orange Room. They will be followed by a journey in to the psychedelic 60’s garage punk rock trashcan glamour world of The Electric Brains before Wet Pelican headline the show with an energetic set to leave the crowd dripping wet and thirsty for more!

Between the acts Thick Richard will be spitting some of his outrageous Manc poetry, crazy stand up comedian Seb Heeley will be MC for the night while Unique DJs will be spinning tunes to keep your toes tapping throughout the night and into the early hours. And of course no Wet Pelican event would be complete without Manchester’s very own, the amazing, the sexy, the exotic, the beautiful, The Hooping Harlots Wet Pelican

More recently, with Erol Alkan, he formed Beyond The Wizards Sleeve which brought the music community to their knees with their mixes of Goldfrapp, Franz Ferdinand, Tracey Thorn, Badly Drawn Boy, The Chemical Brothers and Simian Mobile Disco.

Saturdays, Soup Kitchen

Soup Kitchen
‘Saturdays’ at Soup Kitchen

The guys at Soup Kitchen have gone for a simple solution when it came to naming their regular Saturday night event and consequently it will be called… er… “Saturdays”! The night will exhibit friends and local talents in the cavernous surroundings of their underground dancing den. They have DJs on rotation in the Kitchen and hand the basement over to a different promotion every week, and this weekend it’s meandyou with Vakula taking over the space.

meandyou Vakula Soup Kichen

meandyou presents Vakula / Juniper / Joy Orbison

For this party at Soup Kitchen the brains behind meandyou have invited Ukrainian DJ and producer Vakula to play alongside residents Juniper and Joy Orbison. This event will see Vakula’s much anticipated Manchester debut, giving us one of the first opportunities to see arguably the most talented individual of the new generation of house music practitioners and certainly someone who is globally considered the deep house man of the moment, and Ukraine’s most demanded musical phenomenon.

Surfacing in 2008, Mikhaylo Vityk AKA Vakula has created one of the most consistent and prolific discographies of recent times, covering a spectrum of sounds that blend rich atmospheres, jazz, soul & dub infused samples with classic US house and more experimental techno leanings crafting something very much his own.

As Vakula, and notably his Vedomir alias, he has released on esteemed labels such as Firecracker, Dekmantel, Quintessentials, Ethereal Sound, 3rd Strike, Unthank, and his own Shevchenko and Leleka imprints. His DJ style uses an equally varied palette as his production, meandering through more of his personal & abstract influences along with experimental house & techno and more direct four to the floor sounds a DJ who is willing to turn more unexpected corners than most, not following form and function but with a great talent to keep everything cohesive. His take on house music is heavily influenced by the rich history of the genre, with subtle jazz touches multiplied by unique and very personal attitude to sound design. Consequently Vakula became the first Ukrainian producer to hit the Resident Advisor series of podcasts with a mix consisting entirely of his own quality production.  Vakula
