What's On in the Northern Quarter ~ Friday 7th March 2014

Band On The Wall
XFM’s First Friday with The Fratellis / Kill Van Kulls

The legendary XFM indie-disco rolls on and this month it features sets from newly reformed The Fratellis and Mancester’s ones to watch the Kill Van Kulls followed by an all killer, no filler dance party with mistress of ceremonies, XFM DJ Jo Good. Forever remembered for huge hit ‘Chelsea Dagger‘, The Fratllelis new album ‘We Need Medicine‘ was released at the tail end of last year and marked the end of a 4 year hiatus for the band. The new material reveals a surprising amount of vitality and growth for a band that spent nearly half a decade apart. Not only is it a welcome return, it’s one of the Fratellis’ most consistently engaging albums. Support comes from Manchester’s ones to watch The Kill Van Kulls. And of course, XFM DJs Jo and Hattie will be providing music that rocks until the early hours; from game-changing classic anthems to new talent such as Peace, Jake Bugg and Foals, you’re guaranteed to be dancing to the very best rock, indie and alternative music spanning both time and genre.

Brother & Bones, Ruby Lounge

The Ruby Lounge
Brother & Bones / Hugo Kensdale and Band

Brother & Bones are five men that write songs with the artistry of Folk troubadours, the energy of punks, the swagger of rock stars and the self-belief of stadium headliners. A quintet so versatile that they can switch from soul searching laments to chest beating triumphalism with the flick of a wrist and the blink of a steely eye. It’s in the live arena that this beast truly comes to life with their already legendary stage shows having seen them slay venues from small bars to festivals taking in a support tour with Brit Award winner Ben Howard along the way. Brother & Bones are not a band that create a barrier between themselves and the audience, for these guys the audience is the show. The band play with passion, determination, poise and with only one goal in mind; to entertain. Musicians end up in the crowd, the crowd storm the stage and before the end of the night they are one pulsing, throbbing mass of elation and belief in the deity of music. Brother & Bones are on the way to achieving legendary status and they are doing it the right way. The only decision you have to make is whether you get on board now or wait to be swept along in their wake. If you are already on board tonight’s show at The Ruby Lounge comes with support from Hugo Kensdale and the Band.

Tankus the Henge, Night & Day

Night & Day
Tankus The Henge / Kath & The Kicks / Night Owls

A six piece powerhouse of a band drawing visual and musical influences from old time Fairgrounds to modern day Circus; The Beatles to Tom Waits and Gogol Bordello to Radiohead, Tankus the Henge embody a look and a sound that lies somewhere between their South East London home and the carnival town of New Orleans. The world of Tankus the Henge is uplifting and wild, dark and heartfelt. Described as one of Leeds’ most raw, new and alternative acts, Kath & The Kicks have been creeping through the Leeds Music Scene and across the UK with a style similar to that of a true rock/punk band from the 70s. There is nothing manufactured here, there is only musical talent, rock band ethos and an envious vision that runs through the veins of those born to make music. Night Owls have been described as “Talking Heads but more Wolverhampton” and this four piece from the black country have broken into the Manchester scene and been met with a smiling face. If you’re serious about your music, get down and dirty with Night Owls, and don’t expect it to be a quiet night out.
