Matt & Phreds
The Soul Circle Gang

Tonight at Matt & Phred’s welcome The Soul Circle Gang, a fresh and innovative Leeds based band who bring together nine experienced musicians who weave elements of funk, soul, reggae, world and jazz into unique new sounds. Led by Lara Rose (who has previously sung with The James Taylor Quartet, The New Mastersounds, The Haggis Horns and Corinne Bailey Rae), The Gang are in their element live, delivering sparkling performances featuring energetic grooves, dexterous improvisation, soaring vocals and sweet harmonies (Imagine Parliament fronted by Chaka Khan). The Gang released the double A-side single ‘Fresh Fruit / Umbrella of Life‘ in April 2013, which has received local and national radio play. On the night they will be mixing up original tracks and some carefully selected covers from the funk, soul, world, and reggae styles.

Nankeens, Ruby Lounge

The Ruby Lounge
Nankeens / The Fallows / No Hot Ashes / David Shurr

What it takes to be a truly great band hasn’t changed since the first electric guitar chords were recorded. Even in an era when artists are made famous from singles alone, on stage is still where it really counts, meaning a quality act must have talent well beyond the studio. That’s certainly the case with The Nankeens. Originally members of two separate bands, this four-man outfit in their mid-20s, led by two brothers, hail from the same Salford as the Lads Clubs, although their indie rock sound has no time for local heroes of days gone by. Instead the focus is on contemporary songwriting about personal experiences, not to mention powerful arrangements that make feet and heads move. Tonight at the Ruby Lounge they are supported by The Fallows, No Hot Ashes and David Shurr.

Martin Carthy, BOTW

Band On The Wall
Martin Carthy

Band On The Wall are delighted to welcome Martin Carthy to their stage. For more than 40 years Martin Carthy  has been one of folk music’s greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it. Whether in the folk clubs, on the concert stage or making TV appearances,  there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn’t played. He’s a ballad singer, a ground-breaking acoustic and electric-guitarist and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. He always prefers to follow an insatiable musical curiosity rather than cash in on his unrivalled position. Perhaps, most significant of all, are his settings of traditional songs with guitar, which have influenced a generation of artists on both sides of the Atlantic, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon.

Arguably the greatest English folk song performer, writer, collector and editor of them all~ Q Magazine

Unfortunately Martin Carthy has lost his voice and has to cancel tonight’s show. It has been rescheduled for 17th July, all tickets remain valid.
