Night & Day
Stretch Local presents Martin Brew / Francis Wooff / Julie Wills / Dan Soulsmith
Stretch Local is a season of fortnightly club nights taking place at the Northern Quarter’s renowned Night & Day Cafe. The nights, presented by Northern Groove, aim to provide a regular platform for Manchester and North West based DJs. A departure from their previous ‘Stretch Disco‘ nights, Stretch Local will allow the DJs more freedom to play what they love, but always “stretching musical boundaries”. Tonight’s Stretch Local presents the talents of Martin Brew, Francis Wooff, Julie Wills and Dan Soulsmith.
Martin Brew (Fat City / J-Walk)
Through numerous productions, and hundreds, if not thousands of spellbinding live DJ sets, Martin Brew has contributed to many a Manchester soundtrack; be it on a night out, or on a stereo/ iPod. With releases on Fat City, Pleasure Music, EastWest and Peacefrog, Martin’s music has reached far and wide. Stretch Local look forward to a true cosmic brew!

Band On The Wall
Dave & Ansell Collins / King Cosmic Sound DJs
A major coup for Band on the Wall as they present the first ever Manchester concert by the legendary Jamaican reggae duo and their band. Dave Barker and Ansell Collins were working for producer Lee “Scratch” Perry in Kingston in the late 1960s before they joined forces in 1971 to produce the massive reggae single ‘Double Barrel‘. Released by Techniques Records, part of the Trojan Records label, it topped the Jamaican and UK charts in March of that year and remains a firm dancefloor favourite among reggae fans across the world. Check out this video of their Number 1 performance on Top Of The Pops (and stick around to the end of the video for some awesome dancing, that’s how to end a show!)
The follow-up release, the similarly styled ‘Monkey Spanner‘, enjoyed the same international success. After cutting an album, Collins and Barker parted company to pursue individual careers with Collins becoming a much in demand session player and Barker became resident in the United Kingdom where he sang with several soul groups before the pair reunited again. While they’ve played the odd gig in London, this will be the first chance reggae fans will get to see this much-loved pair performing all their hits with full band in Manchester. Don’t miss this!

Matt & Phred’s
Inspector Gadjo Quartet
The Inspector Gadjo Quartet infuses Electric Bebop with the spirit and fire of modern Gypsy and Latin Jazz. Original compositions and a fresh approach to standards have gained the group a healthy following, with appearances at some of the U.K’s top clubs and festivals as well as regular BBC radio play listings and features. The trio are no strangers to Matt and Phred’s with regular electrifying performances over the past twelve months, but now they bring a higher level of energy with the addition on Casey Greene on Sax, Flute and Clarinet.
Founder member and guitarist Will Barnes has performed with the likes of Gary Potter, Frank Vignola and John Etheridge as well as taking mentoring from the world renowned musician Martin Taylor. Drummer George Jackson initially cut his teeth on big band swing before embarking on a successful session career where he worked with many bands and artists including Roy Harper, Steve Hogarth and the bass player formally known as Gordon Sumner. Bassist Tommy Mills has a wealth of experience playing Jazz, Bluegrass and Zydeco with some of the U.K’s top touring acts across The UK and Europe. Casey Greene has toured extensively travelling to The Monterey Jazz Festival, venues in the U.S.A., Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, The Middle East, New Zealand, Ireland, Switzerland and Spain. In 2004 Casey emigrated to the UK and imediately started performing on a professional freelance basis.
“A hugely enjoyable evening of swinging jazz with the quartet maintaining a high degree of musicianship throughout. Barnes’ bebop flavoured approach to Django Reinhardt’s music makes a refreshing change to the usual “Hot Club” style copyists” ~ Ian Mann, Jazzmann.com
