Stretch Local presents Special Secret Guest DJ / Jason Boardman / Abigail Ward
Stretch Local is a season of fortnightly club nights taking place at the Northern Quarter’s renowned Night & Day Cafe. The nights, presented by Northern Groove, aim to provide a regular platform for Manchester and North West based DJs. A departure from their previous ‘Stretch Disco‘ nights, Stretch Local will allow the DJs more freedom to play what they love, but always “stretching musical boundaries”. Tonight’s Stretch Local presents the talents of Martin Brew, Francis Wooff, Julie Wills and Dan Soulsmith.
Tonight Stretch Local present a very special ‘secret’ guest who is a true legend of Manchester’s pre-rave dance scene, specially employed by the late, great Tony Wilson back in 1982 to bring the freshest black dance sounds to the Haçienda, Hewan Clarke. Wilson had been inspired by his trips to New York with New Order in ’81 and was keen to transplant the intoxicating sounds of Manhattan’s underground disco scene to his home turf. Our special guest was duly installed as resident at the newly-opened Haç and went on to deliver a rich blend of Street Soul, Jazz-Funk, Disco and Proto House right up until 1986.
Jason Boardman
This event will also feature Aficionado’s Jason Boardman who has been playing records since before the term ‘Balearic’ was applied to music! With his partner in rhythm – Moonboots, both previous guests at Stretch, they have been spinning their own unique flavours of blissful Disco and cosmic Funk through their legendary Aficionado nights at Zumbar, and more recently at their mega-popular bank holiday Sunday sessions at Electrik Bar in Chorlton. Aficionado has also become a label in its own right, their first two vinyl releases being best sellers at Piccadilly Records, with a stunning third release about to land.
Abigail Ward
This time Stretch’s resident DJ lady – Abigail Ward will be supplying the warm up soundtrack, so expect sultry soul, string things and knee-deep funk cuts. Abigail is a veteran of Manchester’s record shops, having worked at Vinyl Exchange, Kingbee and Piccadilly Records. She DJs regularly across the city, holding residencies at Mint Lounge, Cornerhouse and Odd Bar.
