What's On in the Northern Quarter ~ Friday 23rd August

Matt & Phreds
Weekend Sun Music

Influenced by sample-heavy 90’s Hip Hop, with its rule-breaking blend of 60’s Soul and Funk and old danceable jazz, Weekend Sun blend old and new with influences varying wildly from early Duke Ellington and New Orleans jazz through to the Incredible Bongo band, Be-Bop and Tribe called Quest. Weekend Sun’s first demo-collaboration was given airplay on BBC 6’s Craig Charles’ Funk & Soul show back in Sept 2010 but it was the single’s B-side that brought Weekend Sun the most praise. With a second single in the bag in 2012 Weekend Sun are currently recording their debut album which is due for release in September and interrupt that process to come and entertain us at Matt & Phred’s tonight.

Amity, The Castle

The Castle Hotel
Amity

Wolverhampton born and Brighton brewed Amy Forrester started off by banging the drums after being influenced by Festivals at the age of 15. Once her Bobby Gillespie-esque drumming style had been honed, she taught herself guitar, discovered the art of looping and even created her own instruments. Not stopping there the one woman behind AMiTY decided to put all this together, taking the gift of mutli-tasking to a whole new level. Since the days of recording her debut EP in a spare room studio AMiTY partnered with Pledgemusic to raise the funds for her first solo tour and met her target in just three hours, which is one of the fastest ever met on the site. Now the eagerly awaited i AM AMiTY 2013 TOUR, funded by fans via PledgeMusic, comes to The Castle Hotel.
