What's on in the Northern Quarter, Friday 22nd April 2016, Spaceheads & Paddy Steer, Gullivers

Gullivers
Spaceheads & Paddy Steer

Hot on the heels of a successful tour of Portugal, Germany and Switzerland, Andy Diagram and Richard Harrison, aka Spaceheads, are playing what promises to be a spectacular night of both electronic wizardry and psychedelic visual effects at Gullivers. Diagram, best known for his trumpet playing with Manchester icons James, plays through a series of electronics, with loops and effects, building up layers of breathy noises, rhythmic sounds and general weirdness that you wouldn’t normally believe could come from a trumpet and then playing magical melodious tunes, utilizing echo and wah-wah pedal over the top – all controlled from a mobile phone attached to the trumpet by, of all things, a fish slice! He is accompanied by long-time musical partner Richard Harrison, whose percussive trickery includes use of bits of tin can, bottles, sheets of metal and most bizarrely, a pair of squeaky toy pigs! But the Spaceheads experience isn’t just an aural treat – they are accompanied by Rucksack Cinema, whose live mixing of video images, from black and white films of steam trains, 1920s space films and clips from classic movies combines with images of the universe, spinning stars, psychedelic swirls and blocks of light and colour projected around the walls, floor and ceiling of the venues they play, turns the whole show into a complete mind blowing audio-visual experience not to be missed. They are joined by Paddy Steer and Mal Dino.

The Spitfires, Ruby Lounge

The Ruby Lounge
The Spitfires / The Barmines

The Spitfires are a bold and brash band who were raised on The Clash, The Jam, The Specials, The Smiths and Arctic Monkeys. Their energetic and powerful live performances have already seen them play over 250 shows and with their growing fan base and reputation it’s no surprise that the band came to the attention of Paul Weller and The Specials who both personally invited them along for support slots in the past 12 months. Selling out gigs up and down the country without the support of an agent is no mean feat and in turn has made The Spitfires one of the best live bands that many want to see. Take your chance to see them when they play The Ruby Lounge tonight with support from The Barmines.

Beach Baby, Soup Kitchen

Soup Kitchen
Beach Baby

South London indie-pop four-piece Beach Baby head out on their debut headline tour and find themselves at Soup Kitchen tonight, with support from Willie J Healey. Beach Baby’s transatlantic, sensory take on slacker-pop was brought together via Athens, Dorset and Sheffield. They met in the musically-rich halls of Goldsmiths, where co-vocalists Ollie and Lawrence placed an advert looking to flesh out their then-folk-driven duo. Future bassist Iraklis turned up dressing like a 50s freshman (and swiftly got the gig), before the addition of drummer Shep rounded off the dreamy mix of sounds that would define Beach Baby. And it’s this quintessentially British take on the glamourized post-college experience – the frustrations and thwarted fantasies that might actually await you – which underline Beach Baby.

BC Camplight, Band On The Wall

Band On The Wall
BC Camplight

Hey! Manchester and Now Wave present Philadelphian turned Mancunian BC Camplight (Brian Christinzio) at Band On The Wall. BC was banned from the UK last January on the eve of releasing what should have been one of the most celebrated records in recent years. ‘How To Die In The North‘ was praised as a bold maniacal psych masterpiece which showcased Christinzio’s singular twisted talents for genre-melding songwriting and psychoactive production. However, the country-less Christinzio was forced to watch the ill-fated campaign deteriorate from the sidelines following his expulsion from his home and most supportive territory. Despite continuing to tour in America and mainland Europe, Brian felt the spirit of the record left him when he left his beloved adopted home town. But now the former War On Drugs live member turned rogue cult figure is coming home. Anyone who has seen BC Camplight on stage will tell you this prodigious live experience should not be missed…but if you’ve left it until now to get a ticket you’ve left it too late as this show is unsurprisingly sold out.
