TVAM, Castle Hotel

The Castle Hotel
TVAM / Jupiter-C / Sam Frost

BBC6 Music favourite TVAM takes over The Castle Hotel tonight with support from Jupiter-C and Sam Frost. TVAM is one man, Joe Oxley. Taking influence from a lifetime of repeats, reruns and reboots, he crafted his own low-budget, high-risk concept. A world in which broadcast becomes performance. Sonic references straddle the spectrum of influence – think Boards of Canada’s irresistible nostalgia, think Suicide’s deconstructed rock ‘n’ roll, think My Bloody Valentine’s infinite noise. Using home cinema formats we’d all ditched by the turn of the century and a stand we haven’t seen since the classroom, Oxley shines a harsh light on our misplaced nostalgia. Weaving found footage with stark sloganeering and a taste for garish hues, TVAM comes off like Adam Curtis taping his favourite Nicktoons.

7.45pm – 10.30pm / £5 early / £6 adv / BUY TICKETS
The Castle Hotel / 66 Oldham Street / Northern Quarter / Manchester / M4 1LE

The Heads, Ruby Lounge

The Ruby Lounge
The Heads / Dead Sea Apes

In the early 90’s, in a back street garage somewhere in Bristol, Simon, Hugo, Wayne and founding member of The Heads, Dave Spencer would jam for hours and then retire to Simon’s house for tea and smoke until they could barely communicate. After a personnel change, 12 years later they are still putting records out and still finding it strange that people buy them and come to their rare gigs, of which this show at The Ruby Lounge is one. Although rare the buzz from playing live still keeps them going especially since adding their own psyche lightshow powered by Lost Johnny. Tonight for this rare occasion at The Ruby Lounge they are supported by Dead Sea Apes.

Since then he has released albums on various labels and toured across the globe. Don’t DJ is interested in what he calls ‘musique acéphale’ – a metric which has no distinct starting point and thus encourages the listener to constantly switch his metric focus to discover different ‘points of listen’ within the same arrangement.

Sun Ra Arkestra, Band On The Wall

Band On The Wall
Sun Ra Arkestra / DJ Irfan Rainy

Sun Ra was one of the greatest and least known jazz artists of the last four decades. Composer, bandleader, pianist, poet and Afro-Futurist philosopher, he founded the Sun Ra Arkestra to take jazz into unexplored territories – his style drawing simultaneously on black vaudeville, modern dance, Egyptian cosmology, Eastern philosophy, surrealism, kitsch, and the Bible. The Arkestra performs today led by 91-year young alto saxophonist and long-time Ra collaborator Marshall Allen. The mischievous brass blasts and the grooves keep rolling, as the big band – fully dressed, as usual, in space capes with a hint of Ancient Egypt – takes off once again in a joyous burst of tightly organised madness. Join them for this special celebration of the Sun Ra Arkestra’s 60th anniversary at Band On The Wall!

Matt & Phreds

Formed in 2005 in Liverpool to play the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grappelli, as made famous in Paris in the 1930s-1950s (gypsy jazz), Swingology started playing with the traditional line up of 2 Acoustic Maccaferri Guitars, Violin and Upright Base but quickly added percussion and vocals so as to expand the traditional gypsy repertoire and include more modern jazz standards and some quirky twists on pop and rock classics. The occasional oddity is also thrown in to this mixing pot to produce this unique blend of distinctive, highly pulsating, rhythmic music which is guaranteed to get all toes tapping at Matt & Phred’s.
