Cale Tyson, Gullivers

Gullivers
Cale Tyson

Cale Tyson is a singer and songwriter from Nashville, Tennessee. Born in a small town in Texas, he was raised in Fort Worth, the place where he first heard the classic country sounds that have inspired and enriched his gentle, melancholy and undeniably whiskey-soaked sound. With a nostalgic heart and an ear for melodies from long ago Cale Tyson is a great ambassador to the great country songwriters that have come before him and also a persuasive plea to those who might think that country music’s best days have been and gone. As long as Cale Tyson has a say in it, the best days might yet be still to come. Check him out at The Castle Hotel tonight.

The music is fabulous, a kind of traditional country with a 21st century twist…just wonderful” – Bob Harris

Outstanding country debut from American tearjerker” – Uncut

Brix Smith Start, Ruby Lounge

The Ruby Lounge
The Rise, The Fall and The Rise by Brix Smith Start launch

The Rise, The Fall, and The Rise is the extraordinary story, in her own words, of Brix Smith Start. Best known for her work in The Fall at the time when they were perhaps the most powerful and influential anti- authoritarian postpunk band in the world, Brix spent ten years in the band before a violent disintegration led to her exit and the end of her marriage with Mark E Smith. But Brix’s story is much more than rock ‘n’ roll highs and lows…find out more at The Ruby Lounge tonight as Brix is in conversation with Abigail Ward from Manchester District Music Archive (MDMA) plus enjoy a full live set from Brix & The Extricated.

Emma Pollock, Soup Kitchen

Soup Kitchen
Emma Pollock / Elle Mary

Hey! Manchester brings Emma Pollock to Soup Kitchen tonight. From her career as a principal songwriter with The Delgados through her excellent brace of solo long players, Pollock’s ability to craft leftfield earworms has never been in doubt; with her new album’s debut single Emma has broken her half-decade’s silence with the barreling rhythms of her former band and the urgent guitars of alt-pop heroes Tanya Donnelly and Kristin Hersh. Placing those taut guitars and infectious rhythms to one side though, it’s Emma’s vocal that really elevates Parks and Recreation to another level of beguiling pop: the laid back warmth of her delivery a perfect foil for the song’s percussive bluster. Support for the show comes from Elle Mary of Elle Mary & The Bad Men.

Bitty McLean, Band On The Wall

Band On The Wall
Bitty McLean / DJ Mikey Don

With a series of reggae-pop hits in the mid-’90s, Bitty McLean‘s smooth and classic vocal approach helped offset the gangster ragga approach then prevalent in reggae and dancehall. Born in 1972, McLean was drawn to classic reggae at an early age, and by his teens he was performing in front of Birmingham’s biggest sound systems. After enrolling in a sound and engineering class at a local college, McLean began working with U.K. roots reggae legends UB40, first as an engineer and eventually as a producer and occasional singer with the band. Behind the scenes he kept working on his own recordings, which paid off in 1994 when he placed three songs in the U.K. charts, including covers of the Shirelles’ ‘Dedicated to the One I Love‘ and Fats Domino’s ‘It Keeps Rainin’.’ Tonight he comes to Band On The Wall to entertain you with support from DJ Mikey Don.
