Grant Nelson

One of the Godfathers and pioneers of UK Garage plays to  a capcity of only 100 at Stage & Radio tonight. Grant Nelson is heralded as the Godfather of UK Garage due to his numerous club hits on his Nice ‘n’ Ripe label in the early 90’s. It was his sound along with a few others that gave birth to the then known as ‘Sunday Scene’ which went on to become UK Garage. He is joined on the decks by Oliver Drops.

Interior and Tally Ho! Promotions present The Raincoats. The Raincoats, seminal post-punk band, ‘godmothers of grunge’ and inspiration to a generation of riot grrrls, are celebrating over three decades of doing things the way they think they should be done. In 1977 Gina Birch and Ana da Silva met and formed The Raincoats and their journey has led them to becoming one of the most important underground bands Britain has ever produced. The Raincoats created a sound that, while inspired by punk and rock music that had come before was uniquely and uncompromisingly powerful and female, and which has held a fascination over all those lucky enough to have stumbled across it. The Nightcreatures play New Orleans R&B inspired by the hit HBO series ‘Treme‘ and the recordings of Dr John, James Booker and Professor Longhair. They draw their repertoire from a varied mixture of New Orleans classics, old time blues, traditional spirituals, mardi gras and more modern songs which are all given the ‘Nightcreatures treatment‘, as well as original music. Half blues band, half brass band they have the capacity to perform in a street parade as well as on stage and deliver a driving rhythmic sound that demands their audience dance….so that’s just what you can expect to be doing if you are at Matt & Phred’s tonight.

Robert Chaney

Tall and thin, as pale as a sheet of A4, guitarist/singer/songwriter Robert Chaney is not the kind of person you imagine hailing from sunny South Florida. As well as being inspired by early Dylan and Townes Van Zandt, Chaney projects his debut ‘Cracked Picture Frames‘ through a dusty existential lens pointed at the American South with technique adapted from such inspirations as French film New Wavers, Truffaut, Godard and Melville as well as Southern Gothic authors like Cormac McCarthy and Carson McCullers. Support for this show at Gullivers comes from Manchester duo We Were Strangers.

SONDER Festival 2016 is a four day music, comedy and arts festival based here in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. The festival looks to bring together creative talent from across the region and also supports some amazing causes. SONDER festival is passionate at giving people from all backgrounds the opportunity to learn new skills in the creative industries. They also work alongside homelessness charities, food banks and mental health charities across the region.
