The original Black Dog Ballroom in the Northern Quarter is getting bigger. Not just a little bit bigger either, it’s set to increase in size by 50% with a new extension under Affleck’s Arcade. The brand new dance and live space space – dubbed The Bunker – will house a stage for live music, DJ sets and comedy nights as well as a dance floor and ping pong table, all complete with its own bar and high tech light and sound system.

The Bunker will be unveiled to the city on Thursday 12th of May when a three day party kicks off with the legendary Grandmaster Flash on the decks for a massive invite only VIP opening party. Friday 13 May will see the launch of LOVE, the new weekly Friday night for all things funk, soul and disco and then Saturday night will host a special guest DJ as they bring the new dance floor to life.

The venue will host a series of new weekly nights including a live acoustic night – Bare Bones Acoustic Mondays and Ping Ping Disco on Thursday nights in association with Beat Boutique. Every Friday, LOVE! will offer a destination for nice people searching for good music late into the night.

Black Dog Ballroom launched back in 2009 with a sleek neighbourhood vibe complete with pool room and pin-code protected Ballroom, quickly becoming a favourite of the cool Northern Quarter crowd. The existing space underwent a refurbishment back in September to freshen up the six year old space and offer more dining room in the main bar as the dance floor moves into The Bunker. The owners also plan to unveil another space later on in the year to further enhance the underground venue’s offering.

It’s been over six years since we opened Black Dog Ballroom and since then the Northern Quarter has undergone some major changes. We felt it was about time we gave the place a new dimension; we’re giving The Bunker a large dance floor and cool club vibe, allowing our guests to carry on the party into the early hours.” ~ Ross Mackenzie, owner at Black Dog Ballroom Group

I’m looking forward to seeing what they have done to the place and getting down to The Bunker.
