Support the RSPCA at your Northern Quarter charity shop

Recently opened in the Northern Quarter, on the corner of Oak Street next to Manchester Craft & Design Centre, is RSPCA Manchester‘s newest store. Joining the already open shops in Didsbury, Urmston and Chorlton, the Northern Quarter Store aims to raise much needed funds for RSPCA Manchester & Salford‘s work as a local animal rescue centre.

Costing in the region of £300k a year to maintain, all of which they have to raise themselves, the role of the local RSPCA branch is to take in the animals that the national RSPCA inspectors rescue. They then rehabilitate them and rehome them, but not having an animal centre instead they use a network of foster carers and pay to house their animals in private boarding facilities too (such as a cattery, kennels and rabbit hotel!). In 2012 they took in 469 animals and found homes for 411, which is a record in the branch’s history and puts them on a par with local branches with animal centres, a fantastic result. They manage all this with just the charity manager, and 2 full time animal staff which means they are all constantly busy but able to keep their costs to a minimum to make sure they can plough as much of the income they raise and receive from the public directly back to the animals.

Sally the shop dog

Sally the ‘shop dog’

If you are an animal lover you may not want to look on their website as you will fall in love with the animals they have rescued and want to take them all home! If you do want a pet then they can help you out, but if you don’t or maybe you can’t, maybe when you visit the shop you will get to meet Sally the ‘shop dog’. Sadly Sally is very elderly now and on her way out thanks to lung cancer and diabetes, but she is loved dearly by all the team, not least by her owner Stephanie, who is the NQ Branch’s manager, even though she’s gone potty (Sally that is, not Stephanie!).

So if you have any clothes, shoes, cds, books (in fact most things non-electrical) that you want to donate, want to have a browse for some bargain clothing or want a rabbit, guinea pig, cat or dog you know where to head!
