Over the past year, PLY has given eight carefully selected emerging artists or collectives a helping hand to showcase their work at the Northern Quarter venue, with one of the artists chosen to win a £1000 grant to support their next project.

Now PLY has announced the winner of its creative contest Life With No Labels and will present them with the PLY x Absolut award for Emerging Talent.

After much deliberation and the careful analysis of the beautiful and innovative work by all eight entrants, Jessica Loveday has emerged victorious based on concept, messaging, depth, execution and customer feedback.

I’m ecstatic to have been selected as the winner of the PLY x ABSOLUTE award for Emerging Talent, the quality of the work from the other artists was very high so I feel honoured to have won. I’d like to thank PLY and ABSOLUTE for the opportunity so make and exhibit new work and of course for the prize money which I’ll be putting towards my next creative project.” ~ Jessica Loveday

Life With No Labels was the simple brief and is based on the concept of the limited edition Absolut Mix bottle. Inspired by the six-colour rainbow of the LGBT Pride flag, the design’s semi-transparent triangles allow the bottle’s colours to overlap in distinct ways when viewed from different angles. This intersecting effect symbolises the connection that is created when various unique individuals mix together.

Jessica’s collection looks at the relationships of three bisexual couples; Jessica interviewed them to collect visual ideas and concepts to created surreal worlds inspired by the conversations that she had with them.

She uses doodle style drawings combined illustration with text and repetitive pattern to create vibrant thought bubbles that explore the relationships of loved up pairs.

We’re really proud to have put Life With No Labels together with our art partners Absolut. Giving such amazing emerging local talent a platform has been an absolute pleasure and we were blown away by the standard of work donning our walls throughout the competition.

The decision has been really difficult and now a few of our decision makers are no longer speaking! After many chats we decided that Jessica’s collection fitted the brief perfectly and her message was so strong that it couldn’t be ignored.” ~ Rashid Khan, General Manager

The rest of the competition included original collections by duo Bianca Mesce and Paris Veazey, Mella Moylan, Mary Naylor, Immy Llewelyn, Kate Cocker, Liz West and Rachael Bellis.
