Mint Lounge
Funkademia NYE 2012>2013

Funkademia NYE

2012 has been another very successful & entertaining year for Funkademia. Now firmly established in the heart of the Northern Quarter and having recently celebrated 17 years under a groove they are Manchester’s longest ever running weekly club night. Saturday nights at the Mint Lounge have been fantastic throughout 2012 so hence they thought it only right to celebrate the dawn of a new year at their disco-home, the Mint Lounge nightclub.

DJ’s: Their resident DJ crew will be manning the decks in the main room with the very enigmatic prince of funk Trafford Lovething leading the proceedings in the main room with the Good for the Soul boys in support. In the Babyfunk backroom we will be putting on our sister night Northern Funk with DJ Myk Nolan taking charge in a discerningly soulful manner.

Times:  In order to provide people with a full night they are opening the doors an hour early at 10pm with the funk going through until at least 4am 2013. If the people want it they’re happy to keep the wheels of steel spinning & in years gone by we have been known to have the place still rockin’ at 7.00am.

£: As usual they like to keep things very reasonable. This year the early bird tickets will be just £5 which is exceptional value for NYE Eve. Once these are gone its £10 & £15 on the night. However it is worth pointing out in 17 years of doing NYE events we’ve always sold out in advance.

Request Line: To personalise things they’re doing the popular Request Line slot again. Ticket holders can e-mail in their top 3 Funkademia tunes & we’ll give them a spin in Request Line hour between 2-3.

Reservations: NYE can be a bit of a palaver to organise so if people are looking to make a group booking and want Funkademia to hold some tickets back while you get your mates organised e-mail them & they’ll sort it.

Buy In Advance: Every single NYE event they have done since the first back in 1996 has always sold out well in advance and given that they already sell out (literally not metaphorically) every Saturday we expect this year to be no different.  Hence we really would advise people to get tickets in advance and asap.  Funkademia NYE Tickets

“The debacle that was Millenium NYE proved something to us. We were the only night in Manchester that sold out that year as we refused get drawn into the £99 ticket thing. 13 years later we’re still putting on great nye parties.  On New Years Eve we believe people want to bank on a good solid fun night out with their mates with quality music and friendly people in a nice club where they’re not ripped off. Hence no big name DJ’s or ticket prices & we’re sticking with our tried and tested  Funkademia dj team in our favourite venue. Quite straight forward really – if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”  ~ Dave Payne, Funkademia Promoter

10.30pm – 3.30am / £5 earlybird / £10 advance / £15
Mint Lounge / 46-50 Oldham Street / Northern Quarter / Manchester / M4 1LE

The resulting music is a breathtaking combination of bass-heavy, down-tempo, dub grooves and far-out modal-jazz explorations. The perfect soundtrack to ring in the New Year to. The band are Nick Walters – Trumpet (Riot Jazz), Misha Gray – Piano and Keyboards (Marley Chingus), Dave Spencer – Bass (Marley Chingus), Johnny Hunter – Drums (Skamel / Riot Jazz) and Sharlene Squire – Vocals

Bay Horse NYE

This year The Bay Horse is rocking up the New Year with two ace bands. Tickets are just £3 in advance from The Bay, Piccadilly Records or on the door (if there are any left), or if you are feeling all hi-tech you can get them here;  HapBay New Year Tickets

Age of Glass – an experimental trio, combining the timeless melodies of Reggae, Blues and Folk with a 21st Century rhythm section. This dynamic approach enables them to pollute the Mississipi delta sound with a digital durge of slick well oiled, smoky Trenchtown beats and bleeps, dragging Reggae, Blues and Folk kicking and screaming into the post modern urban wastelands.  The Age of Glass

Stalagmites – Stalagmites are an Atmospheric Rock & Roll band. Based in a warehouse in industrial Salford, they have been developing their sound for over a year now with their first gig being played in late 2010. Traces of great bands of the past will be found, such as Echo & the Bunnymen, and so too will traces of more recent bands such as Interpol, however, it is different elements of such bands which are being used in combination to produce something altogether new, refreshing, melodic and visceral.  Stalagmites

Plus Saturday Social DJs Craig Johnson and Ian Scott arm themselves with a bucketload of records and take over the Bay Horse bunker to continue their vinyl protest. A monster mix celebrating the weird, wonderful and well known, with all the crackles and pops left in! Expect some: Indie, Funk, 50s, Ska, Punk, 60’s, Folk, Soul, 70’s, Psyche, Electro, 80s, Reggae, Surf, 90’s, Country, Hip Hop and even some New!
