Manchester Food and Drink Festival has announced the shortlists for their appropriately titled ‘Manchester Food and Drink Festival Awards‘. The list of nominees has been put together by the MFDF Judging Panel, which is made up of the region’s leading food and drink critics and experts (but somehow they missed me out!). But now the real experts get to have their say…you!
The public votes will be combined with scores from the judging panel and the awards are given out at the swanky Gala Dinner on 10th October. Needless to say we’re fully behind the Northern Quarter nominees, it only gets tricky for us to decide who to vote for when there are multiple nominees in one category.
The nominations are…
Evelyn’s Café Bar
In categories dominated by some of the ‘big names’ of the Manchester restaurant scene it is fantastic to see a relative newcomer to the Northern Quarter, Evelyn’s, getting a handful of nominations. They are up for Restaurant of the Year, Casual Restaurant of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and their Head Chef Byron Moses is up for Chef of the Year. All thoroughly well deserved as Evelyn’s has without doubt brought something fresh to the Northern Quarter, and not just their delicious food.
Evelyn’s / G18 Tib St / Northern Quarter / Manchester / M4 1NB
On to the rest of the nominees…
Cheap Eats Venue of the Year – Northern Soul Grilled Cheese
If you follow us on Instagram you’ll know that Northern Soul is a favourite of ours when it comes to satisfying eats, so we’re delighted to see them getting a nod in the Cheap Eats category. Amazing grilled cheese sandwiches, awesome mac ‘n’ cheese, delicious milkshakes and some of the friendliest staff around.
Northern Soul Grilled Cheese / 10 Church Street / Northern Quarter / Manchester / M4 1PN
Bar of the Year – Cottonopolis / Tariff & Dale / First Floor Bar, Cane & Grain
The Northern Quarter’s bar scene is buzzing so it’s great to see three of our go-to spots get a nod in this year’s awards.
Cottonopolis / 16 Newton Street / Northern Quarter / Manchester / M1 2AE
Tariff & Dale / 2 Tariff St / Northern Quarter / Manchester / M1 2FN
The First Floor Bar, Cane & Grain / 49 -51 Thomas Street / Northern Quarter / Manchester / M4 1NA
Craft Ale Bar of the Year – Port Street Beer House
It must be hard to overlook PSBH when it comes to this category so another worthy nominee. The place to go in the Northern Quarter for die-hard craft ale fans and newbies alike.
Port Street Beer House / 39-41 Port Street /Northern Quarter / Manchester / M1 2EQ
Coffee Bar or Tea Shop of the Year – Takk / Ezra & Gil / Fig & Sparrow
Before the bars take over at night the Northern Quarter is awash with great spots to enjoy a tea, coffee or some food whilst working, chatting or just watching the world go by. But it’s not always just about the coffee as you can pick up fresh produce, provisions, greeting cards, kitchenware and more.
Takk / 6 Tariff Street /Northern Quarter / Manchester / M1 2FF
Ezra and Gil / 20 Hilton Street / Northern Quarter / Manchester / M1 1FR
Fig & Sparrow / 20 Oldham Street / Northern Quarter / Manchester / M1 1JA
Casual Restaurant of the Year / Newcomer of the Year -Rudy’s Pizza
Ok, ok, so strictly speaking Rudy’s is in Ancoats and not the Northern Quarter but they are close enough to get a shout out from us. Rudy’s have been kicking up a pizza shaped storm since they opened up their permanent venue on Cotton Street. Great to see them in amongst these nominees.
Rudy’s Pizza / 9 Cotton Street / Ancoats / Manchester / M4 5BF
Pub of the Year – Crown & Kettle
Another business on the other side of Great Ancoats Road but a mere stone’s throw from the NQ means Crown & Kettle get a mention here. A fine pub right well worth the nomination.
Crown & Kettle / 2 Oldham Rd / Ancoats / Manchester / M4 5FE
Pick you favourites (obviously all the NQ venues!) and place your votes over here. Voting closes 28th September at 9am.
