Kosmonaut came into the Northern Quarter realtively quietly in August 2012; no pomp, no circumstance, just a cool, chilled out place to spend time, chat with friends, meet new friends and enjoy one of the quality beers or cocktails on offer. They paved the way for the renaissance of the east end of the Northern Quarter opening as they did on Tariff Street and have since welcomed new neighbours The Whiskey Jar and Takk to the street with more to follow soon.
The owners seemed to strike a chord with the Northern Quarter crowd and the bar has gone from strength to strength since it opened with a constantly evolving offering. First up they opened up a basement space which has now become home to a table tennis table (and location for Pasta Paul’s monthly Ping Pong parties), then they introduced food, and now they have launched an additional 80 seat “diner style creative space” along with a new menu, drinks list and website. I guess their success is pretty tangible.
Kosmonaut has a laid back, artistic feel inspired by the bars in NY’s meatpacking district. The three rooms have been stripped back to bare brick revealing the former cotton warehouse’s original character and are filled with individually sourced reclaimed fixtures and fittings and ever changing art on the walls. The bar top and tables are graffitied from their days in school science labs and the light fittings imported direct from derelict communist factories. The new space pretty much doubles the size of Kosmonaut but it seems much larger because of it’s layout. The bar is at the top end of the room allowing for the booths, a huge banquette and the ‘school desk’ tables to extend the length of the room. Plenty of room to work in during the day (coffee and super-fast WIFI as standard), hold meetings, enjoy lunch and welcome the evening in with a few drinks of course!
The updated drinks list takes in over 60 artisan beers, with a rare and independent selection to rival any in town, from Flying Dog ales to Weird Beard brews. The newly refreshed craft cocktail list includes among many others the Femme Fatale, with the sorbets, sherbets, liqueurs and cordials all made in house by the award winning bar team. Monday to Friday from 4pm-7pm Kosmonaut have their Happy ‘Hour’ with special offers on beers and wines so you can save yourself a few quid after work while winding away the stresses.
The extensive food menu is served all day (Noon-9pm) and now includes a range of NY sandwiches and salads that perfectly complement the impressive selection of burgers, hot dogs, pizzas and steaks. Mains include a Texas chilli beef brisket, the market fish of the day and an incredibly popular chickpea curry served in a mug with a corn bread muffin. Sundays are of course all about the Kosmonaut Roast (35 day aged topside of beef / 1/2 free range chicken / Pork 2 ways, pork belly and pork rump all £11 each / Nut roast with veggie gravy £10), plus the bar is also the proud host of the infamous and highly acclaimed Manchester Egg, a delicious twist on a classic dish.
From Thursday nights onwards you’ll find NQ favourites Pasta Paul, Will TRAMP, Dance Lady Dance, Clique or Murkage DJs playing out a Northern Quarter soundtrack and the genial bar staff are on hand every night of the week to talk you into one of their award winning cocktails. With a capacity of 300 and three rooms over two floors, Kosmonaut is the go to venue for album and media launches, creative networking events and exhibitions for Manchester’s up and coming artists; providing a blank canvas, a friendly atmosphere and helpful staff to produce the perfect event.
