Sam Kelly, Dry Live

Glasswerk presents Sam  Kelly (Britain’s Got Talent Finalist)

Not strictly a Halloween night special but entertaining none the less, Sam Kelly is a 20-year-old singer/songwriter from Norfolk. Despite coming from a non-musical background, Sam caught the musical bug from an early age, and has ever since dreamed of becoming a professional songwriter.

Sam is a multi-instrumentalist, and showed a talent for music at the tender age of 5, when he began to learn to play the bodhran, piano, and drums. Since then, he has taught himself to play various instruments including guitar, ukulele, low whistle and mandolin. Sam’s passion lies in the world of folk music; as his only musical influence as a child was his Irish grandfather, who taught Sam to sing folk songs, and also taught him to play his first instrument, the bodhran (an Irish drum).

This influence shines through in Sam’s original material, with evident roots in Irish folk. He always just saw music as a hobby, however, and it wasn’t until the urging of his high school music teacher that he began to view it as more than just a dream. After winning a national young songwriters competition aged 16, which landed him a slot supporting the likes of Mumford and Sons at Cambridge Folk Festival, Sam began to take his music seriously, and decided to apply to study it at university.

As soon as he turned 18, Sam left his family home and moved down to Brighton, where he met young songwriters Jamie Francis and Tarq Bowen, and co-founded the band Tarq Bowen Trio. Over the next year, both with his band and by himself, Sam experienced the highs and lows of the music industry; from supporting the likes of Seth Lakeman, Bellowhead, The Beat and Jim Moray – to playing in his local pub every Friday for a tenner and a pint. It was by chance that Sam happened to be in London on the day of the Britain’s Got Talent auditions, and so he decided to go down and see how it all worked….Six months, three performances, and sixty-thousand Twitter followers later,  Sam is working in the studio writing and recording his debut EP, which is due for release by the end of 2012.
