Van Susans

With a passion for harmonic melodies and a gift for love tales, the 5 fresh creatures who make up Van Susans are creating ear smiling tunes that are sure to raise your spirit. Their pop-rock core is beautifully accompanied by both an acoustic influence from Olly Andrews (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and a more assertive touch by Ed Dullaway (lead guitar), while Rob Dullaway (percussion) keeps a tight beat with Holly McLatchie (violin) and Bill Showler completing the lineup. In September 2012 they released ‘Paused in the Moment‘ on Beatnik Geek Records. Van Susans

The Castle Hotel
R I S E / The Stalagmites

House of Cards are thrilled to present the debut gig by R I S E at The Castle Hotel with support from Salford’s Stalagmites.

Formed in early 2013 in Manchester by Daz Whittaker (vocals), Ernie Robinson (guitar), Lee Graham (bass) and Dale Baker (drums), RISE hid themselves away to write and rehearse the songs that would shape them. Working closely with friends N-Trance in the studio, the sound on record is that of a band with years of experience yet not lacking aggression and hunger. Forging a sound somewhere between The Longcut, The Music, and The Verve circa-93, RISE have a unique and refreshing sound, simply describing themselves as ‘space rock dance’. R I S E

Stalagmites are a Post-Punk Psychedelic Rock & Roll band consisting of Bradley Lynch (Vocals/Guitar), Alex Hardman (Guitar) and Daniel Jones (Drums). Based in a warehouse in industrial Salford, they have been developing their sound for around a year now. The band have evolved quickly and solidified their unique sound, losing two bassists in the process and finally deciding to be a 3-piece. Stalagmites

From the first note of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Black Dog‘ sixteen-year-old Marcus Bonfanti knew he wanted to be a guitar player. After spending his youth as a trumpet player in brass bands, working 12 hours a day in a kitchen to buy his first guitar, dropping out of a prestigious Music College and touring the world with different artists for almost 10 years Bonfanti has become the sum of all the great music he was exposed to as a young boy growing up in North London. The critical acclaim his first two albums received earned him the 2012 British Blues Award for Best Songwriter. He was also invited by Paul Jones to perform at his 25th Year anniversary show at BBC Maida Vale Studios and as special guest at his legendary Cranleigh Arts Centre Christmas gig.

With his 3rd album ‘Shake The Walls‘ now in the bag Marcus is off out on a UK & European tour to share his music, tonight heading to the Northern Quarter to play at The Castle Hotel. Bonfanti is known for his high-energy live shows with his 3-piece band that have been receiving rave reviews over the last 2 years and solidified his reputation as one of the most exciting live performers on the UK scene. Marcus Bonfanti

“Chrysta Bell looks like a dream and Chrysta Bell sings like a dream. And the dream is coming true.” ~ David Lynch

Chrysta Bell is a performing artist, recording artist, and model who incorporates dynamic theatrical and multimedia elements into unforgettable performance experiences. She has shared the stage with the likes of Willie Nelson, Brian Setzer, Donovan, Adrian Utley (of Portishead), and members of King Crimson. Bell has had the great opportunity to write and record songs with iconic film director David Lynch, their collaboration yielding both the haunting ‘Polish Poem‘ from his ‘INLAND EMPIRE‘ soundtrack and an 11-song album titled ‘This Train‘, released through La Rose Noire records. Chrysta Bell enjoys chilled, unfiltered sake, vintage gear with glowing lights and thinks that sustainablity is super sexy! Catch her at the Ruby Lounge along with support from Minutemaker. Chrysta Bell

Dry Live
OPM

The So-Cal rockers behind hit single ‘Heaven Is A Halfpipe‘ come to Manchester’s Northern Quarter as part of their European tour with support from creatively named Lesbian Plebian.

OPM was formed in 1998 when long time friends John E. Necro and Geoff and Mathew started writing songs together. Originally called STASH, the group recorded a three-song demo tape, which quickly garnered attention from major record labels. Shortly after completion of the demo, the group had inked a record deal with Atlantic Records. Before leaving for their first tour, the band changed their name to OPM, an acronym for ‘Other People’s Money‘ a reference to a large vacation home the band was rehearsing in, paid for by Atlantic Records. They later modified the meaning to ‘Opening People’s Minds‘. Upon returning from their first tour, OPM quickly entered the studio with Atlantic, recording their iconic debut, Menace To Sobriety.

15 years or so later they are back in 2013, a year in which we will see new music from OPM, as well as extensive touring, a few surprises, and as always, they will continue to live up to their name, ‘opening people’s minds’. Have your mind opened tonight at Dry Live. OPM

Soup Kitchen
The Louche / Father Sculptor / Emperor Zero

Soup Kitchen welcome some of their favourite bands to share the bill in the Basement for what promises to be a fantastic night. First up are Emperor Zero. One of the über-literary bands signed to Salford’s SWAYS records, Emperor Zero are a post-punk four piece from Manchester. “Emperor Zero are a diamond in the rough, an intelligent gang who steep themselves in history and literature, but are never ones to make you feel like a lesser being.”- Louder than War. Next we have Father Sculptor. Formed in Glasgow in 2012, their debut EP ‘Faith & Violence‘ was released in April this year. “Shockingly traditional and startlingly 1984.” – The Guardian. Finally, The Louche complete the bill, returning for their first live outing for almost a year, bringing with them new members, new songs and a new relevance. “Keenly melodic, their intricate spectral pop absorbs krautrock, post-punk, Sixties pop and shoegaze, while luscious harmonies provide a bright counterpoint to their dense wall of sound.” – City Life

Band On The Wall
Lee Thompson’s Ska Orchestra / DJ Martin The Mod

One Step Beyond! Get ready for the heavy, heavy sound of the legendary Madness sax man and his madcap orchestra of sublime ska delights as Lee Thompson brings his Ska Orchestra to Band On The Wall. Lee Thompson’s Ska Orchestra were formed in the back streets of Hackney in the early months of 2011. They came together from North, East, South and West London with their common denominator being music, and in particular those good old Ska & Reggae rhythms that burst out of Jamaica in the mid to late 1960s. As well as his usual saxophone duties, Thompson takes on the lead vocals in a hand-picked line up that features amongst others fellow Madness original Mark ‘Bedders’ Bedford on bass. Plus on the decks Manchester’s legendary Martin The Mod on the decks playing the sharpest tunes into the night. Expect a night of blistering ska and rocksteady beats on the dancefloor and a party into the early hours with this legendary player and his oddball band.
The Total Stone Roses / The Marivaux + special guests

The Total Stone Roses play a 90min set of all of the best Roses material including ‘She Bangs The Drums‘, ‘Fools Gold‘, ‘Waterfall‘, ‘I Wanna Be Adored‘ and ‘Love Spreads‘. Throughout the last year or so, The Total Stone Roses have been playing gigs and stunning audiences throughout the country building up a solid fan base that makes them a force to be reckoned with in the tribute scene. The band are all in their early to mid twenties, bringing the same passion, vigor, arrogance and charisma that only the young have, the old want and that cannot be faked. The Total Stone Roses are all pro musicians that do this for a living; all players involved are top draw Leeds College of Music graduates. They strive to re-create the roses sound live and are meticulous in the recreation of their material. You will not find a better sound a like band this side of 1989!

Matt & Phreds
Honeyfeet

If you haven’t already seen Honeyfeet, then Matt & Phred’s can’t recommend this band enough! Raucous, rowdy and brimming with talent, you’ll be stomping your feet before the first song ends! Look out for the super talented Rioghnach Connolly on vocals. That girl can sing! The Band describe their music as “Songs about eating people! Dancing on graves! Infidelity!”

Manchester’s finest ethio-trad, folk-hop & barrelhouse-pop exponents have the skill, charm and (frankly) tunes to pull it all together into a joyful, foot-banging sound. Honeyfeet released their debut EP “Little Boat” on Debt Records last year, with full length album “It’s a Good Job I Love You” to follow this summer.

We see a lot of change in the Northern Quarter and most of the time this is a good thing. Shutters come down on a business and a sign goes up saying that they are “closed for a refurb” or “having a spring clean” with the promise of better things to come. Sometimes sadly the doors never reopen or quite often the original premise becomes something else. Need some examples? Blue Pig was Sevenoaks, Tib Street Tavern was Centro, Luck Lust Liquor & Burn was Socio Rehab and Almost Famous was an office! Occasionally the replacement is a pop-up, and the Kahlúa Coffee House that temporarily replaced the Market Restuarant is a prime example.

So like me I’m sure you will have noticed that the shutters have been down at Bonbon, Teacup‘s chocolate focussed little offspring, for a little while with a promise of “a spring refurb” and you may well have become a little nervous about what was happening behind the black shutters and the hastily scribbled A4 paper sign.

Well the great news is that Bonbon Chocolate Boutique has reopened serving ice-creams, frozen yogurt & chocolate coolers in time for the summer! They have already firmly established themselves in the Northern Quarter owing to the melt in the mouth truffles & salted caramels, and “the most glorious hot chocolate in Manchester” (Manchester Confidential) and now they are going to make sure we keep going back through the hazy summer (please!!) days to come.

Ice-cream & Frozen Yogurt

Bonbon will be using local ice-cream heros the Cabrelli Brothers and London’s Gelupo Gelati to serve up cones, knickerbockers and affogatos bejeweled with chocolate, nuts, fruit and a selection of homemade syrups and sauces in flavours such as fresh mint, raspberry coulis and stem ginger.

Chocolate Coolers & Signature Hot Chocolate

Bonbon hot chocolate is unmistakable. The winning recipe (composed solely of 66% Valrhona chocolate, spring water, cocoa & muscovado) will be served chilled as an indulgent cooler throughout the summer (it will also be available warm for those chillier days).

Boutique

As a boutique, Bonbon offers an ever changing selection of the best chocolates from around the world. For the Spring & Summer Bonbon will offer delights from Forever Cacao, Booja Booja and Montezuma.

Forever Cacao is an ethically focused bean-to-bar chocolate producer, creating ‘raw’ chocolate bars packed with health benefits. Working with the Ashanika tribe in Peru and sustainability charity Ecotribal, Forever Cacao have cultivated an ethical and sustainable supply chain from which they source their cocoa beans. When they arrive in the UK the beans are stone ground with cocoa butter & coconut sugar, set into bars and hand-wrapped before shipping to Bonbon.

Expect a selection of handmade vegan & gluten truffles from Booja Booja in flavours like banoffee toffee, midnight espresso & stem ginger. Montezuma offer creamy & crunchy indulgence in their handmade truffles, with firm, flavourful ganache enrobed in crisp shells, hand sprinkled with crunchy toppings like cacao nibs or toasted coconut.

Homebaked Cakes from Teacup

Teacup’s legendary cakes are available to enjoy in the boutique with a drink, or to take home to enjoy later. Teacup’s pastry chefs have created some bespoke cakes for Bonbon including a Devil’s Chocolate Cake and delicious freshly baked Éclairs. Teacup classics including the flourless chocolate cake & Grand Cru brownies are also available.

With the Bank Holiday fast approaching inevitably thoughts turn to how best to spend the time and make the most of the extra day off. One option would be to head to 2022NQ on the Sunday night for one hell of a shindig. Continuing their mandate of showcasing the great and good of the North West through all their artistic endeavours, Sunday 26th May will bear witness to one of Manchester’s most loved and revered parties in the shape of El Diablo’s Social Club, who celebrate a decade of debauchery in their own inimitable manner.

El Diablo‘s has built a reputation for providing Manchester’s famously open minded clubbers with a journey through only the finest reaches of dance music. The mantra is simple – create the perfect environ for ‘psychedelic disco deviance‘. Raiding everything from wonky italo to alien funk, raw house grooves up to string laden disco, the presence of Piccadilly Records’ Neil Scott and Dave Walker as residents has ensured the city’s personality has remained a core focus throughout.

Past guests at El Diablo’s have included Maurice Fulton, Greg Wilson, Todd Terje, Danny Krivit and Hercules & Love Affair’s Andy Butler, and this time round they will bounce to the beat of Darshan Jesrani.

As one half of disco inspired house music masters Metro Area, Darshan helped reshape the terrain of electronic music in the early stages of the twenty first century. Metro Area’s self titled debut album stands out as one of the very few bonafide classics house music has ever mustered, gloriously evocative of the greatness of electronic music shorn of vocals and obvious hooks. On the solo tip Darshaan has been just as warmly received, whether delivering difficult to pigeonhole productions and remixes or as a ‘selector du jour‘ behind the decks. As befitting of a man of his standing, his sets straddle the great and good of house, disco, techno and even the more delicious corners of pop music. He’s the perfect guest to bring in ten years of malevolently sordid musical swagger.

So join Neil Scott & Dave Walker and their special guest Darshan Jesrani as they celebrate 10 years at the helm of El Diablo’s Social Club. El Diablo’s 10th Birthday Tickets

Tib Street Tavern is officially no longer the new kid on the block! After a fantastic year serving Manchester’s great and good the bar is celebrating its first birthday with a party, and Happy Hour Prices throughout the day!

It’s been an excellent year and Tib Street Tavern has built a name for itself by serving a fine selection of wines, spirits and craft beers. They have also introduced a food menu which has gone from strength to strength, serving traditional British cuisine and a diverse specials board which changes daily.

Where perhaps they have really established themselves is within the realm of sport. They’ve shown every sporting event under the sun from City V United derbies to Burkina Faso v Togo in the African Nations Cup, taking in the Olympics, boxing and other events along the way. They have cemented themselves as the place to enjoy watching sport in the Northern Quarter.

For the party TST residents will be playing a mixture of funk, soul and disco throughout the night, so pop along and wish them many happy returns.

Tib Street Tavern / 1st Birthday Party /23rd May /DJ’s from 6pm – late

For those of you who are mourning the end of the domestic football season, fear not as Tib Street Tavern is ensuring you can still get your fix of footballing banter!

On the 29th May they will be hosting a quiz covering the Premiership and Football League Season 2012/2013 and general football history. So if you fancy yourself as something of an expert then organise yourself a team for this ‘five-a-side’ quiz. Entrance is £5 per team with a maximum 5 per team with cash prizes and bar tabs to be handed out to the winner. In the event of a draw there will be a sudden death playoff which hopefully will be a quiz penalty competition! To register a team email info@tibstreettavern.co.uk

Following the quiz the footy action will continue as the England V’s Ireland match will be shown at 8pm so you can enjoy the game whilst you bask in the glory of your quizzing triumph, supping on the spoils of your bar tab….or of course commiserating at your woeful display! Either way it will be a great night.

Football Quiz / Wednesday / 29th May / 6pm – late / £5 per team (5 person max)
House Of Cards presents Hurray For The Riff Raff / Walton Hesse / James M Carson

House of Cards are delighted to present a return to Manchester by Hurray For The Riff Raff with support from Walton Hesse and James M Carson.

Hurray for the Riff Raff is Alynda lee Segarra, a 25 year old Puerto Rican from the Bronx. After leaving home at an early age to travel the country, she eventually settled in New Orleans where she began to perform and record with a revolving cast of musicians. She released two records mostly consisting of delicate folk and country songs but things really started to happen when in 2011 the UK record label Loose Music released ‘Hurray for the Riff Raff‘, an album that collected the best songs from those first two records. The Times named Hurray for the Riff Raff one of the Top Ten Albums of 2011. Phil Alexander, the Editor-in-Chief of Mojo Magazine, raved that they “have immense potential and seductive power” and named them second best band at SXSW 2011.

Back in the States, Alynda and her longtime gunslinger on fiddle, Yosi Perlstein, met up with a young honky-tonk band called the Tumbleweeds, just as she began to expand her musical palette to include rock n roll, pop, and soul. In the tradition of Bob Dylan with Band and Neil Young with Crazy Horse, Alynda and Yosi recruited the Tumbleweeds to be their touring band, drastically altering the sound of Hurray for the Riff Raff.

‘Look Out Mama‘ is the result of almost two years of Alynda and the Tumbleweeds criss-crossing the USA, playing over 100 shows in small bars and clubs and is an exploration of classic American music as interpreted by Alynda, covering a wide array of musical ground, with every song unified by Alynda’s soulful vocals and expert songwriting. This is the tour to support the record. Hurray for the Riff Raff

Wet Play’s Friend Swapping Party

Wet Play have been laying low for a while but they couldn’t delay the first drench of 2013 any longer. But they haven’t just been taking it easy, oh no, they have been working on records to delight us all with, the first of which should be ready in time for the party. So what’s all this about a Friend Swapping Party? Well here’s how Wet Play put it; “Meet and mingle. Close your eyes, walk forward and embrace. Bring pals to trade. Bring your best mates and spread joy. Bring your weirdest mate and fob em off on someone else for the evening . Rally your safest or your strangest firm – the choice is yours and theirs. Aunties and uncles: encourage them to attend and get them to buy rounds. Bring your Maverick boss and coax them into giving out jobs to under-qualified pill ‘eds *Remember – Mavericks get in free with their IMA (International Mavericks Association) badges. If you’re low on mates or you get stood up, make the effort and drag some safe tramps in off the street…. Friendliness is next to godliness.”

Wet Play are bringing a couple of their friends for the occasion, namely Preston Brooks and Metrodome to play alongside their residents Randy Marsh, Ste Spandex, Kickin’ Pigeon and Wayward.

Band On The Wall
Funmi Olawumi

The Nigerian singer and the founder of the Yoruba Women Choir, Funmi Olawumi, performs live with her 12-piece big band. Together they mix afrobeat, juju, highlife and fuji to create the thrilling ‘faaji‘ sound that has made her one of Africa’s hottest live acts touring the world today. Faaji is a Yoruba word for having a good time and, with the rich eloquence of the talking drums driving the music, expect explosive rhythms. In her first Manchester club date Funmi plays from her new acclaimed album ‘Funmi Ti De‘. Within her unique musical style, her singing is constantly driven on by massed percussion, slick, chanting backing vocals from two of the Naija Soul Sisters, funky bass work, and sax. Expect this much-loved Nigerian star and her pounding party band to tear the roof off Band on the Wall with their uplifting music!

Pop Bubble Rock: The Postal Service Aftershow Party

The Postal Service are playing in Manchester and this is kind of a big deal for the guys at Pop Bubble Rock, so they decided that the best thing to do would be to throw a massive PBR party to celebrate. So that’s what they are doing tonight at Dry Live, once they are back from the gig of course! They are making it easy to get to this “Official Unofficial” gig because they are laying on a free party bus to Dry from outside the gig at the Academy. PBR got so excited that they have invited their favourite party night to come along and DJ with them so you get to enjoy Refuse To Lose alongside the usual PBR shenanigans and pop, punk and rock. Expect singing, dancing drinking and high fives galore!

Ríoghnach Connolly’s Dark Matter

Dark Matter are an unlikely set-up; one look at the line-up would tell you that. What they have up their multifarious sleeve however is a deep understanding of what this intriguing combination of musicians bring to the fore. Electronic beats, loops & vocal sculpting provide the catalyst for gritty harmonica and powerful brass line to Ríoghnach Connolly‘s colossal folk vocal, while the driving soul-jazz and trip-hop rhythms lead the harmony onward. This is one gig you don’t want to miss! Dark Matter are made up of Ríoghnach Connolly (Vocals/Flute), Jason Singh (Vocal Sculpting/Human Beatboxing), Luke Flowers (Drums), David Schlechtriemen (Bass, Loops and Effects), Biff Roxby (Trombone/Bass Trombone), Ellis Davies (Electric Guitar)and Rik Warren (Harmonica)

The Ruby Lounge
The Handsome Family / Snowapple

The Handsome Family is a 20-year songwriting collaboration between husband and wife Brett (music) and Rennie Sparks (words). Their music has always been Americana in the truest sense – echoing everything from medieval ballad to Appalachian holler to Tin Pan Alley and punk rock. The Sparks write songs that are full of an awed sense of emotion in the face of nature’s mysterious beauty and the wonders of everyday life.

The band’s seventh CD, ‘Last Days of Wonder‘ (2006), was one of Mojo magazine’s Top Ten American Albums, and was called “an unqualified triumph” by Uncut who also named their fourth album, ‘In the Air‘,one of the most important records of the 21st Century. In 2004, a reader’s poll in Mojo named The Handsome Family’s third CD, ‘Through the Trees‘, one of the ten essential Americana records of all time, while The Guardian listed the Handsome Family song ‘Weightless Again‘ as one of the 100 best songs ever written about heartbreak. The Handsome Family

Live Brett (guitar/vocals) and Rennie (banjo/bass ukulele/vocals) are joined by percussionist Jason Toth and tonight at The Ruby Lounge they will be supported by Snowapple.

Two Eyes / Wet Pelican / Minor Blues / The Bluebottle Veins

Two Eyes are four young lads from Manchester – Andy Fidler (vocals/guitar), Jimmy Wraylang (guitar), Sam Oliver (Bass) and Kevin Travis (Drums). They have been writing and playing together under different guises for the last 5 years, pulling in psychedelic blues/rock influences from the 60′s to the present day. They have now combined great songwriting with a powerful, heavy psychedelic live sound. With a rythym section that would “make Keith Moon wince“, and melodic trippy guitars sounding like “Jonny Marr having a showdown with John Squire“, they have now developed their own sound and style to the point where they are happy to unleash it to the world. Dr Luke is the first self released single, with plenty more releases to follow. Tonight they headline Night & Day with support from Wet Pelican, Minor Blues and The Bluebottle Veins.

Sub-Woofah vs Murder Resident Party

When they teams behind Sub-Woofah and Murder started planning this party they decided that as it was beginning to turn a little spring-like with a bit of sunshine and the hint of things beginning to warm up. Since then it’s pissed it down daily and winter has returned! Needless to say the idea of a FREE party remains a good one and given we are all down because of the weather it’s probably even more valid. Tonight they play their usual mix of D&B, Jungle and Reggae, all brought to you by the night’s residents; Euphonique, Muel, S Man b2b AJay, Mike E Freedom, Joe V and Epicentre with MCs Mitch & Frisko. It’s free in before Midnight, so save yourself a few quid and arrive before the witching hour.

‘Standing Pat‘, the debut album from The Dixie Ticklers is an in depth study of New Orleans jazz. The band has put today’s date on early jazz, placing it alongside groove-based shuffles and fresh modern treatments whilst constantly staying true to the polyphonic approach that shaped the music of the initial pioneers such as Louis Armstrong, King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton.

Led by clarinettist and composer Dom James, the six piece ensemble combine their deep love and understanding of the templates and language of early styles whilst each expressing their own musical voice. In recent years they have toured much of Europe and further afield including a fifteen-date tour of Australia in 2012. Daoud Merchant AKA Washboard Merch (John Law, Empirical) and Zands (Karl Jenkins) head the rhythm section whilst Will Rixon (Joss Stone) paints a modern image of the great early trumpet players. Bassist Tommy Antonio pays homage to Jelly Roll as he sings Ballin’ the Jack, with guitar from rising star Nicholas Costley-White. The group has even caught the attention of film director and New Orleans enthusiast Woody Allen who has a copy of their first demo. The Dixie Ticklers

Dedicated Rastafarians, The Abyssinians formed in 1968 and feature the close harmony singing of Bernard Collins, Donald Manning and David Morrison in a band that produced the now legendary ‘Satta Massagana‘ - described as “Reggae’s national anthem, one of its greatest hits and now considered one of the catalysts for early dancehall. Expect this and their other great hits including ‘African Race’, ’Tenayistillin‘, ‘Y Mas Gan‘ and many more as this legendary and intensely loved band raise the Band on the Wall roof.

Stevenson Square is grey. Sure there are some great pieces of street art brightening things up and the shopfronts do their bit too, but overall there is no denying that it is grey. But this is all set to change if a project set up by Red Rose Forest gets the funding it needs to begin ‘greening’ the square.

A blueprint has been put together which proposes landmark street trees are planted, self-irigating hanging baskets installed and a ‘green roof‘ made of edible herbs and fruit planted on top of the disused public toilet which will sit alongside the current Outhouse street art project. It is proposed that liquid amber trees will be planted in the pavement and in the square’s central reservations in a reinstated surface material, which is made from recycled tyres. It is porous allowing the trees to receive oxygen and water which I think is pretty important for them!

“Red Rose Forest has spent the last two decades making Greater Manchester greener. We’ve planted more than three million trees in that time and made a massive difference to the look and feel of our towns and cities. But planting more trees in urban areas has been shown to bring a range of other benefits. They can improve people’s health and well-being and by providing shading and cooling in the summer can help in the battle against climate change. Trees can also reduce the risk of flooding in urban areas by soaking up rainfall.” ~ Pete Stringer, Red Rose Forest

The project has already received support from Manchester City Council who will be donating funding and works towards the project, from CityCo, from resident’s group New Leaf and from various other institutions, but now they are looking for donations from local businesses and the community as a whole to help them achieve their target. With less than £5000 of the original £40k needed left to fund, if we all pledge a couple of quid we could soon see Stevenson Square transformed. If funding is secured it’s hoped the greening initiative can be delivered by this summer and we could all enjoy a more attractive square for us to sit and relax in and help create a ‘street café’ style environment. Now wouldn’t that be nice to see in the Northern Quarter?

If you want to find out more or to pledge a little (or a lot) then hit the button and let’s get greening!! Stevenson Square Greening

On the last Bank Holiday in the Northern Quarter there was a quiet little celebration on the streets and this late May Bank Holiday there is another celebration on the street as the chilli takes centre stage for Manchester’s first ever Fiesta del Fuego. This Mexican inspired celebration of the wonderfully fiery world of the chilli pepper will feature a Chilli Smackdown, Chilli Eating Competition, Chilli Mercado, Moruga Roulette and much more but don’t be surprised if it involves chilli!

Put together by the team behind the Kahlúa Coffee House (Sparklestreet) and the Manchester Egg (Ben Holden), this red hot event will take place outside the old Fish Markets of the High Street and will feature Manchester’s first ever Chilli Smackdown. In this head-to-head cookoff, 6 of Manchester’s best bars, restaurants and cafes (Kosmonaut, Liquor & Burn, Home Sweet Home, Pancho’s Burrito, Kahlúa Coffee House & Soup Kitchen ) will create their most delectable chilli con carne and compete to be crowned as the inaugural ‘Fuego Champions‘.

The Fiesta del Fuego will also feature a Chilli Eating Competition, the Chilli Smackdown, where contestants are asked to push their taste buds to the limit by eating increasingly hot fresh chillies and concentrated chilli products until they can take no more. Punters can also chance their luck in the Piñata Pit, smashing a giant papier-mâché chilli on stage to gather the fiery treats within. Alternatively, and not for the faint hearted, why not brave the ‘Moruga Roulette‘ wheel? With a chance to win cocktails and tacos, the danger lies in falling on the Moruga Scorpion Chilli Nibble Challenge, meaning you have to take a bite of the hottest chilli in the world! If that’s not enough, or perhaps too much to take on, the Chilli Mercado will feature over 300 chilli products will be available to buy, surely enough to satisfy any flaming appetite while a Mariachi band will provide the soundtrack as well additional live sets from some of Manchester’s favourites.

“This is the first time a proper cookoff style event has been brought to Manchester. The Chilli Smackdown isn’t about who can make the hottest chilli con carne, it’s about who can pack in the most flavour, and for those who like it hot, there’s plenty to make you sweat too!” ~ Ben Holden

We’ve all got them; items of clothing we’ve never worn or not worn for a long time, just sitting in the wardrobe waiting for the day that you can be arsed to put them up on eBay or in a moment of philanthropy take them to the charity shop. Well now there is another option for you to consider, the Waste Not Clothes Swap which is taking place at Soup Kitchen on Sunday 26th May.

Simply put you turn up with your old clothes, do some swapping, and go home with new (to you) ones! Sounds like a good day in itself but to make things even more interesting the day will also feature music, vintage stalls, fresh food, homemade cakes, craft ales and of course lots of lovely people. If you are lucky enough to be one of the first 20 people through the door you will be treated to a free tea or coffee and a slice of cake! Waste Not Clothes Swap

Here’s How It Works:

1. Find 5-20 items of clothing you’re not too fussed about owning anymore.
2. Check they are in good condition (clean, undamaged etc.)
3. Make your way down to Soup Kitchen
4. Pay £3 to enter and you can come and go all day between 12-7pm & get 10% off a food & drink item from the Soup Kitchen menu
5. Exchange your items for vouchers; 1 item = 1 voucher. Your items are checked in and displayed.
6. Browse the rails and find the hidden gems you want to take home with you.
7. Take your chosen items back to the desk to check out.
8. Put your new gladrags on, grab a beer from the Soup Kitchen crew and have a well deserved rest.
9. Head home feeling pleased with yourself!

So raid that wardrobe and get yourself to Soup Kitchen on the Bank Holiday Sunday!
