Federal Café & Bar

If I told you that when the owners of Federal Café & Bar were pulling together the concept for their Northern Quarter coffee shop their aim was to create an “antipodean coffee bar” what would come to mind? Friendly staff? Check. Relaxed atmosphere? Check. Decent coffee & quality food? Check & check. Sounds like job done then.

Federal Café, Interior

Coffee is clearly important at Federal and as well as their House Blend which comes from Ozone Coffee Roasters in London they also serve a range of seasonal single origin coffees, giving the discerning drinker the opportunity to create their perfect brew. But good beans are wasted without good baristas and Federal are careful to ensure that theirs really know their stuff, with experience gained in various shops in the UK and abroad and training from Ozone to ensure they get the very best from every coffee. You can check out the complete Federal drinks list here.

Complementing the drink selection Federal offers a simple (but delicious) brunch menu including breakfast staples such as eggs benedict, omelettes and their signature French toast. If you follow them on Twitter or Instagram you’ll have seen plenty of mouth-watering shots! They use fresh ingredients and local suppliers – their sourdough bread is from Lovingly Artisan in the Lake District. There is always an impressive cake selection too, baked in house by their chefs in case you fancy a sweet treat instead of, or as well as, your brunch.Take a look at the Federal Brunch Menu.

All week they are open until 6pm (5pm on Sunday) and the kitchen cooks until late as they serve hearty, delicious food and tempting cocktails. Expect sharing boards and dishes like steak & fried egg, sweet potato rosti with hollandaise sauce and their Bloody Mary beef brisket sliders with horseradish mayo, rocket & crispy shallots to name just a few! The cocktail selection incorporates Opihr oriental spiced gin with Mediterranean tonic and of course their signature espresso martini with vanilla infused vodka, Hodson blend espresso & a dash of sugar syrup. Better yet it’s 2 for £10 on all cocktails from 4pm-6pm weekdays!

Like many spots in the Northern Quarter they don’t take reservations at Federal Café and with only 28 seats you may have to wait…but it’s well worth it!
