The term speakeasy is bandied about liberally these days, but in the case of Dusk til Pawn it is probably a very apt term. Hidden away on Stevenson Square this place is a cocktails lovers dream and is quickly becoming renowned for its innovative house infusions. You name it, they like to make it.
So why is ‘speakeasy’ appropriate for Dusk til Pawn? Well you need to find it, and from the outside, despite its central location, you would easily walk past it. The windows on the doors are barred and the large displays are filled with old guitars, televisions and other bric-a-brac that you would expect to see adorning the display of a bona-fide pawn shop; and of course the large neon “PAWN SHOP” sign!
Walk inside however and what this place is all about becomes immediately apparent; this is a quality bar that prides itself on the quality of its drinks. The back bar is stacked with an impressive array of spirits, housed in a large antique unit, which are the vital ingredients in the delicious cocktails, both inventive and classic, that the knowledgable and skilled bar staff put together.
As per sister bar NoHo, Dusk til Pawn is set in a Grade II listed building which affords it high ceilings and an original parquet floor which coupled with ample banquette seating, free play jukebox (which recently had Billy Ocean’s album signed by Billy Ocean, yep the real one!) and intriguing light fittings give the bar a measure of sophistication that is perhaps somewhat at odds with many of the Northern Quarter’s other drinking establishments. But that’s definitely a good thing and one of the many joys about our favourite part of Manchester, every door you go through takes you somewhere unique, somewhere special and somewhere new to explore.
But back to the real reason you need to find this place; the drinks. The cocktail list is extensive but as with the best cocktail bars you ask for it and the bartenders will make it, and make it with a smile. Dusk til Pawn offers seasonal cocktail menus, a fantastic Bourbon collection, and on Sundays you can unwind experiencing Bloody Marys from around the world. If you aren’t into your spirits there are of course craft beers, wines and soft drinks to make sure everyone in your party is happy.
DJs get the place bouncing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and you can reserve yourself a table all week if you ask nicely and you can have the whole place to yourself for a private-hire Sunday to Thursday.
If you miss finding this place on your first attempt then go back and try again. It will be worth the effort.
