A new, week long creative festival, Design Manchester 13 starts today, 28th October, and continues through until Friday 1st November. The festival, curated with ambassador Malcolm Garrett (RDI), working closely with lead sponsor the Manchester School of Art, part of Manchester Metropolitan University, is a series of inspirational talks, interactive workshops and evening events, on the theme of longevity and includes appearances from Mark Farrow (RDI), Kate Moross and Colophon Foundry.

There is a full programme of events happening throughout Manchester, including events in the Northern Quarter which are detailed below, with Thursday 31st October being the core festival day, hosted by Professor David Crow, held at Manchester Town Hall and featuring an impressive line up of influential speakers with a Q and A hosted by Malcolm Garrett. Mark Farrow (RDI) comes home to Manchester as keynote creative in conversation with Design Week editor Angus Montgomery; co-Directors of design for the RSA Nat Hunter and Sophie Thomas will speak about sustainability project The Great Recovery; plus interactive artist Andrew Shoben of greyworld, who is a co-founder, along with Malcolm Garrett, of the 5D Institute at the University of Southern California, will discuss his work, and the future of narrative media.Also speaking are London-based creative Kate Moross of the prolific STUDIO MOROSS, whose work can currently be seen as part of a limited collection celebrating the 150th anniversary of the London Underground, and independent type foundry Colophon, set up as distributor for typefaces by London based design studio The Entente and other selected fonts.

10×10 In Process

Kosmonaut will host a two week exhibition entitled DM13: 10 x 10 Process – photography of ten collaborative works produced for the festival’s launch in August which celebrate Manchester’s spirit of inclusive creativity. Shot by Sebastian Matthes, this includes work by infamous mosaicist Mark Kennedy, performance poet John Cooper Clarke, Liam Hopkins (Lazerian), illustrator Daren Newman and photographer Percy Dean.

Band On The Wall

Speakers Le Gun, Alex Zamora and Alec Dudson (Intern Magazine) will be discussing the notions of audience, process and inspiration followed by questions submitted online, at the event via projected twitter feed and from the audience. Materials generated on the evening along with submissions inspired by the talks will provide the framework, determine the format and influence the art direction of the new OWT publication. The evening is to be compered by Gemma Germains.

D&AD Creative Brief-In

D&AD present an inspirational day of industry-led talks and workshops focused around the theme of Technology, UX + D?? featuring Adam Todd  (magneticNorth) and Tom Bradley (BBC Knowledge and Learning). With a talk at Noon from leading creatives on the current themes, trends and practices to help you develop your responses to the briefs and from 2pm collaborate with your peers during this quick-fire workshop. Develop techniques on how best to interrogate a brief, identify the insights and prototype your ideas. Both events are free to attend, open to all students, recent graduates and under 24s. Make sure you book onto each event separately.
