Cord gets roughed up, starts BYOF & finds Pet Shops and Porn in the Vault!

Cord, the Northern Quarter’s back street gem of a boozer is undergoing something of a transformation. Tucked away on a quiet side street Cord helped kickstart the Northern Quarter in 2001 with a modern twist on a traditional pub and now after 7 great years they’ve decided to re-furbish, re-invent and re-create their ‘little gem’. Slats are out and “rough-arse” scaffold is in with battered pre-loved chesterfield sofas set against large-scale illustrations by renowned Manchester illustrator Chris Howker in ‘Kill Bill’ yellow and a newly installed state-of-the art Bose sound system through which you can expect to hear some of Manchester’s finest playing.

Cord Refurb

The refurb underway!

Cord’s new gallery space Vault will also launch soon with its 1st exhibition “From Pet shops to Porn” reflecting the history of Tib Street, which is curated by the brilliant OWT collective (for more information check out our previous post). Vault will then host new quarterly changing exhibitions throwing colour over the legendary white glazed brick basement.

Post refurb hand pulled real ales will be the order of the day and the bar will offer a discerning new range of bottles, beers and spirits, whilst perhaps the most interesting development is the announcement that Cord will be the first B.Y.O.F. (Bring Your Own Food) venue in the Northern Quarter. Cord will supply the plates, napkins & cutlery whether your relaxing with a latte or settling in with a beer and enjoying the free WIFI so all you need do is decide what food you want to bring along with you. Great idea!

Works upstairs are due to be completed on the 5th of July and the official relaunch is on the 12th of July when Vault is officially opened too, so make sure you get down to check it out.

Fantastic. I used to love Cord in the old days, had some lengendary nights there with the old NQTR- ites which sadly have all seemingly dissapeared from the N QTR. I rarely go there my self these days but this wants me to retry CORD after a long absence. I remember going to a BYOF bar in Birmingham last year and it was great. Good that at last someone in MCR has the nerve to do it, would have myself if I owned a joint! I will definately be trying out the new cord soon as last time I went in (shortly after the last refurb) – I hated what they had done with it.. Cool
