Bluu

Situated on the corner of Thomas Street and High Street in the old Smithfield Market Buildings, Bluu has been sat prominently in the Northern Quarter for well over a decade now. Recently though it’s had a huge refurbishment, getting rid of  rid of the 50’s pin up girls and the low level red lights to make way for a fresh new interior and replacing them with a more “modern retro theme”, filled with a mixture of smaller cosy booths, high rise seating and industrial styled fixtures.

It is not only the décor that has been transformed though as Bluu have bounced back with a brand new meat filled menu (don’t worry vegetarians, there are plenty of options for you too!). The focus of this new menu is firmly based around their brand new industrial smoker oven which they have imported from the USA, and with it they have created such delights as melt in the mouth ribs, burgers and sweet yet savoury chicken wings (check out the Bluu Food Menu) amongst other signature dishes. Alongside these carnivorous meals, are a selection of 6 separate sauces that are presented to each customer, handmade to pair with different flavours of the menu. A new brunch and lunch menu have also been launched, featuring bacon & maple syrup pancakes, banana waffles & Cuban sandwiches (Bluu Brunch Menu).

The drinks menus have also had a revamp, with the 20 strong hand-designed cocktail list sporting a mix of classics, innovative new blends and twists on old favourites. To complement the American smoked theme, an extensive range of Bourbons from all over the world are available, with food pairings to match. The draught and bottled range have also seen an upgrade, with pints of Camden USA and Vedett Blonde on draft and cans of Beavertown Gamma-ray and Flying Dog Easy IPA lining the fridges. If you remember ‘Old Bluu‘ you will know that on the way to the toilets was a strange little downstairs area; this has now got a purpose and has become Bluu’s sister bar The Smithfield Social. Inspired by the 1920’s and the prohibition era in America, this underground den is filled with metal panelled walls, large leather booths and rich dark wood. The drinks menu also varies from the upstairs bar, with a small yet varied selection of homemade smoked cocktails taking pride of place. This area can also be hired out for private parties.

Bluu is well worth a(nother) look with many pleasant surprises to be found, not least of which are sitting within that new menu.
