Ian Brown once famously said “Manchester’s got everything except a beach”. With the weather as it is in our City this probably isn’t too much of a loss, but what we will soon have is our very own Almost Famous Beach Club. This won’t be any normal Beach Club though. Why? Because it’s coming to us from the mind of Almost Famous. Follow them on Twitter and you’ll know that it would be hard for Sigmund Freud himself to figure out what is going on in their grey matter.
What we do know though is that they deliver on their promises ~ delicious, decadent burgers and cocktails.
Now they are taking the brand outside the Northern Quarter, not for the first time and not for the last, and heading down to the Great Northern, setting up camp in the amphitheatre outside All Star Lanes and overlooked by Epernay to bring Manchester the Almost Famous Beach Club. You’ll be able to find it if you follow your nose as you get to the corner of Peter Street & Deansgate. So what’s this Beach Club going to be like? Well mix up a Balearic beach club with a Las Vegas pool party, add a dash of magical late night hotspot, then mix it all up with a whole load of Almost Famous style. No, I’ve no idea what that makes either but that’s part of the draw of Almost Famous isn’t it? The main amphitheatre steps will be utilised as seating with 100 custom made cushions big enough for 2 people giving your backside some respite from the hard concrete and in the bowl itself will be picnic tables and of course the cabanas from which all the mayhem will be served. To finish off the beach theme Almost Famous have teamed up with local Northern Quarter label Dead Legacy to kit out the staff in some of their new summer range, with tropical scenes aplenty. Obviously there will be burgers. A new seasonal burger menu is being conjured up and these and the other menu items (shrimp, squid, chicken, mushrooms, halloumi) will be served to you on Almost Famous frisbees, which are yours to keep when you’ve finished. If you are in a hurry they are setting up a takeaway service too so you can grab your burger and run, perfect for lunch breaks. The other side of Almost Famous are the drinks and they aren’t going to disappoint. With a cocktail menu full of tropical twists and fresh slurpers, summer sippers and heavy hitters you won’t go wanting for something to give you that taste of paradise. If bottles are your thing there is a designated bottle bar for speed of service which frankly is music to my ears. San Miguel and Jack Daniels Honey are on board as part sponsors so expect some treats along the way. Expect a whole lot more from The Beach Club though, with a full calendar of entertainment to compliment the food and drink with bands, DJs, dancing groups and sports demonstrations all having their place at this summer pop-up. With a large sand boule court (you can borrow the boule for free, no need to bring your own!) and table tennis too you can get involved and be part of the fun. Maclure’s Barbers will be on hand in ’The Beach Look‘ cabana offering free beach styling, hair braids, mojito facials & neck massages. Keep your eyes peeled as there are some strong rumours of some very special themed events too ~ I’ve heard that Andrew Nutter might bring his own twist to the Beach Club, and so might Simon Rimmer and Hawksmoor. Famous are also lining up some other food fair kinds of events too but I guess we’ll all have to wait and see what they come up with and who is going to play the opening party. I’m told it’s going to be “someone exciting“! ALMOST SUMMER aims to launch Thursday 27th June running for around 10-12 weeks but there may be a few preview nights before then. Opening hours will be Noon to Midnight, Thursday to Sunday but if the sun is shining you’ll probably find it open! It’s all weather dependant! Now let’s all hope for some sunshine….. #MANCHESTERBEACHCLUB
UPDATE: Since the fire that took out the kitchen at Almost Famous in the Northern Quarter you can either get your Almost Famous fix right here at the Beach Club or if you are in the Northern Quarter head to Luck, Luck, Liquor & Burn where Almost Famous are now serving up their burgers.
